"Hey, Jake!" I smiled, pushing aside the stacked diapers aside.

They promptly fell on top of me.

"Vic!" he whined.

"Sorry! Sorry!" I stuttered, trying to get everything back in its place.

"It's alright." He sighed, blowing a strand of dark hair out of his face.

Shelley ambled up.

"What the heck did you love birds do?" she shouted in mock exasperation.

"Sorry, Miss Shelley," I apologised profusely.

She ignored me.

"Portman!" she barked. "I wanted Stay-Tite, not Neverleak! Do it again!"

Jake rolled his eyes.

"Ugh." he muttered as Shelley stalked away.

"Wow...." I remarked. "Someone has a grumpy boss!"

"Wonder how long it took you to find out. My shift's nearly over anyways, I'd better get to Grandpa." he sighed.

"Oh, can I come? I've hardly seen him!" I asked.

Jake started to answer me, but his phone rang.

"Yah?" he asked, reverting into Polish.

"Yakob, is it you?" Grandpa Portman asked.

"Yeah, it is. What is it Grandpa?" Jake replied.

"Yakob, thank god. I need my keys. Where did they put the keys?"

"What key?" he questioned.

"Don't play games with me." he snapped. "You know! They are coming for me. Do you understand? I don't know how they found me but how am I supposed to fight them?! With a goddamned butter knife?!"

Jake closed his eyes, and swallowed.

"Grandpa, everything will be alright. I'm coming back soon."

"No don't come, it's not safe!"

I looked at Jake, like "What the heck is happening?"

Jake sighed.

"I gotta get back home, Shelley, family crisis." Jake shouted over his shoulder as he ran away desperately.

"Jake, wait! I'll come!" I shout running after him.

"Thanks, Vic."

"Anytime," I reply, running to my car and flinging the door open.

"You have a car?! And a drivers license?"

"Um, no. Not really. But this is an emergency! And besides my mom says I can drive this car around." I justify myself.

"Y'know, Vic despite being friend with you for, well forever, you never fail to surprise me."

"I think I'll take that as a compliment." I smile as I turn to Jake's house.

"Just wait here...." Jake orders me.

"Hey, I know your grandpa! He's nice. I can handle it!"

"Fine. Be careful then." he commands me.

"Sheesh, calm your farm!" I laugh opening the door and stepping through the threshold.

"Oh. My. God." I exclaim at the state of the house.

Papers litter the floor, and everything is a mess.

"Jake, what happened?" I panic.

"I dunno, but I've gotta find Grandpa!" he shouts, and runs towards the back yard.

I look at the room and frown. The photos of the peculiars that Abe had shown me and Jake when we were younger were littered on the floor.

I kneel next to it.

And it seems to sparkle when I flip it over.

I look up and realise how dark everything is.

"Jake? Jake!" I scream through the darkness.

Nothing but pure silence answers me.

I panic and run out to the backyard.

And find Abe on the floor with blood pooling uunderneath him.

"Mr Abe, are you alright?" I ask, even though the answer was obvious.

"Victoria. Is that you?" he rasps weakly.

"Yes."

"Go. Find the bird. Go to the loop. It's not safe here.

Jake came crashing in.

"Grandpa!" he yelled. "Vic! There are monsters! Out there!"

Abe looked at Jake weakly.

"Yakob, Victoria find the bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old man's grave. September 3rd, 1940." he said, strength going out of him.

"Emerson-the letter. Tell them what happened." he said with his last ounce of strength.

"I will." Jake choked out, blinking back tears.

"I will." I repeated.

And I blacked out.
