So taking marijuana was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I forgot about the problems my parents were having. Forgot what I did to Beatrice. Shit, I forgot my own name.
“Richard, you’re high as I don’t know what bro.” Alan shook his head and laughed. He only took enough hits to show me how to do it so he was no where as bad as me.
“Yeah man,” I was laying on the grass in his backyard. I stared at the clouds. They kept dancing.
“I hope you come down soon because I’m sure your parents are going to start wondering where you are.” Alan was sitting next to me playing with his lighter.
“I don’t even care. My dad probably wont be there when I get back anyways.” I lifted up my hand to wave back at the trees that were tying to get my attention.
“Why not? They having problems?” I could see Alan looking at me from the corner of my eye.
“Yeah. He thinks she’s cheating and she thinks he’s an abusive asshole. Both is true though and he said he was leaving.” The topic of our discussion slowly started to bring me back down to earth.
“Damn. That sucks man. I’m sorry bro.” he shook his head. “My parents are head of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament so if they ever divorce, people will question their valid ability of leading the Cathedral.
“I didn’t know your parents was that religious. They know you smoke just about everything?” Alan laughed.
“Yep they do. That’s why I have this place.” He turned and spread his arms out towards the mansion behind us and the 12 acre backyard.
“Wow. You lucky bastard.” I smiled. I wish I had a place like this all to myself.
“Yeah I guess so. My dad comes by every now and then to see how I’m doing and stuff.”
“Why do I get the feeling that he smokes with you?” Alan chuckled.
“He does. But I never told you that.”
“I knew it.” laughed.
“So you out of the clouds yet?” Alan stood up and started to search for the pack he always kept on him.
“Sadly yes. I guess I better go back home.” I sat up and slowly got to my feet.
“Ok Richard. Are you going to take you cigarettes with you?” he started walking towards the back door and I followed him.
“No. Don’t want my parents to catch me with those.” I laughed and he joined in.
“Ok. I can hold on to them and you can come pick them up anytime. Just give me a call before you come over so I can make sure your stuff is good.”
“Alright man. I can do that.” We made it to the front door and he turned around to shake my hand.
“Alright now. You be a good boy and don’t give your parents anymore trouble.” We laughed. I like this guy.
“Yea Alan. I’ll try.” I stepped on to the porch and started walking to my car.

I parked the car in front of my house. Only my moms’ car was there. Interesting. I got out and walked to the front door. I went in and saw her sitting on the couch staring at the blank television screen. She didn’t turn to look at me
“Mom?” she didn’t answer. I walked over to her and sat next to her. I placed my hand on her knee. Her head slowly turned in my direction. “Mom…you okay?” The far away look left her eyes after a moment.
“He left Richie. He finally left.” She smiled for a moment and sighed. “I’m going to go make some cookies. You want any?” she got up and walked to the kitchen.
“Uuh…no thanks mom. I think I’m going to lie down.” I got off the couch and started walking to my room. I’m so confused.
“Okay dear. You feel better now.”
I walked into my room and closed the door. I collapsed on my bed. With my dad gone, I don’t really know how I feel right now. Part of me feels happy, the other part is thinking of all the things he’s taught me to do. It’s going to be weird without him around. I closed my eyes.

I woke up on the floor. What the hell? I got up and looked around; I must have been sleep for a long time because it’s pretty dark outside. I heard a crash come from some where in the house. I spun around and walked out of my room. I followed the scuffling sounds that were coming from the kitchen. I walked in but I couldn’t see shit. Why the hell are the lights off? I switched them on. “Whoa,” there was glass everywhere. The sink was over flowing and dirty dishes crowded the countertops. I back tracked into the living room and grabbed a pair of shoes I kept by the door and then walked back to the kitchen. As I walked in, a crash came from my parents’ room. I turned around and ran. I tried to open the door but it was locked. I banged on it, jiggling the handle. It didn’t budge. I stepped back and rammed my shoulder into it. The wood splintered and it popped off its hinges. In here, all the lights were on. The mattress was off their bed; the lampshades turned over or knocked off. Dark stains covered one side of the bed. I walked over to it to get a closer look. Blood? I looked around. “Mom!” I yelled. I heard muffled whimpering coming from the bathroom. I turned and opened the door. “Oh God,” my mom was in the tub. The water wasn’t clear, but bloody and as dark as wine. “Don’t you move boy” I jumped in surprise. I didn’t even notice my dad standing right next to the tub. He had my mom’s favorite radio in his hand and it was plugged into the wall. “Dad?” I looked at him. He didn’t even look like himself. His eyes looked like they didn’t even see me, they looked through me. “Take on step and I will drop it in.” he held the radio over the tub. I heard a whimpering sound and I looked down at my mom. She was looking at me, her eyes wide. “RUN,” she mouthed to me. I slowly shook my head. “Dad, put the radio down.” He stared at me. “Did you people really think that I was going to leave and stay away for good?” he laughed. “C’mon you two! You both know me better than that. This is my game” He turned and looked down at my mom. My heart was hammering against my chest. “We made a fine son, haven’t we?” he turned back to me. “Say bye to your mom boy,” adrenaline rushed into my veins. As if in slow motion, I watched my dads hand unclench. I saw the radio fall towards the tub. “NO!” I yelled and jumped across the small space separating me from my parents. I reached for the radio before it hit the water. It slipped right out of my hands and fell in with a splash that drenched me and my father. My mother started to scream and jerk from the electric shocks.

I sat straight up in my bed. I looked around, it was still light outside and I was drenched in sweat. I put my head in my hands. Thank God that was a dream. I got up and walked to the kitchen. There was my mom making chocolate cookies. I walked over to her and hugged her.
“Richard! Your feeling better I see.” She placed a kiss on my cheek. “I made you some cookies because I know you were bluffing when you said you didn’t want any.” She smiled and patted my shoulder. I laughed.
“Yeah, I was. Thanks mom.” I grabbed a cookie off the sheet and shoved it in my mouth.
“And besides, we gotta put some meat on them bones! If you turn to the side I might just lose you!” I laughed.
“Okay mom,”
