The next morning, they rose and after eating they hopped on the flyer. This was going to be their third race and again the other junior team was going to be in it. Now the two of them wanted to beat the other team just to show that bitch they were good. It might be hard on the other team but they were going to do what was needed. They didn't want to run them out of the race but they did want to do better.
The race had been a struggle. It was harder than the other two and they had barely managed to place second. The other team had ended up coming in first which had ticked them off but at least they had placed. The first two races had been somewhat controlled and constrained but this one had gone all the way. It had taken place over not just some course but parts of the nearby town as well.
Once they were done, as with the other races, they had been tossed a card which they assumed had some cash on it as well as a bag with clothing in it. Sten had decided he was going to need to get a cloth for his head under the helmet for the next race. His hair was soaked with sweat and so was his face. His eyes were stinging due to the sweat which had run into them.
When they finally reached the compound that damn woman settled for a grunt as she tossed the money card at them. She had taken it that morning and was now returning it since they had placed in the race, "Don't spend it in one place skags." She stumped off to do whatever she normally did during the day.
When they checked, they made a bit more than the last race, "I think we might want to look at some parts. If we had more speed, we could have won today." Risty was torn between doing a speed or lift upgrade or a safety upgrade. All three would be needed but she was pretty sure they didn't have enough funds. Even though they were being careful of the first two purses they only had about two hundred credits left. When they had looked at the parts last time the upgrades would going to take a good portion of what was left.
Sten shrugged, "You're the pilot, whatever you feel is best. I have to agree some of the racers had more speed than we did. Not much but some. Even if we hadn't won there were a few times it would have helped get past some of the others." He walked with her to the container. He had to roll his eyes when Muttley snickered again. He wasn't sure why but occasionally the thing would snicker. Chances were, it was just to annoy them, "He rather likes holding onto you doesn't he?"
Risty snorted, "He does and thank goodness he doesn't have fingers or it would be really uncomfortable." He always clung on the same way. One paw on her chest and the other wrapped around her back somewhat. As usual she thumped him for the snicker which only garnered another snicker. However annoying his hanging on was she had grown to like the silly little thing, "After we cool down we can head to town and see what we might find."
"Sounds like a deal. That race was hard and I am sweating my ass off still. I might just strip down to shorts and a t-shirt for lunch." He was going to change no matter what since he hated being in sweaty clothing. It would help him cool down as well.
"Might do that myself. I wouldn't wear it while flying in a race but it is hot and I am feeling sweaty myself." She walked into the container and stripped her clothing off. After pulling on some shorts she flopped in one of the chairs.
Sten rolled his eyes at her since now she was in a sports type bra and shorts, "Thanks for the show..." He stripped and pulled on some shorts before turning a fan on. It was something they had purchased at one of the second-hand stores they had visited.
She snorted at him, "Considering we sleep in the same container, have changed around each other, and this is no worse than a swim suit deal with it." Hell, the sports bra covered more than the bikini she had worn before they ended up wherever they were. As far as she was concerned he was complaining since it was 'underwear'. After sucking down plenty of water she was starting to feel cooler and better. Needing to take a leak in the middle of a race was not something she wanted to deal with. They didn't stop the races for a bathroom break so she tended to drink less the day before.
