Chapter 5
Magic comes in different types.
One of them being Mana, the mental and spiritual energy primarily used in magic. Sol Imperium is potent with mana, blessing its people and creatures inhabiting the lands with powers that defy logic and reality. Regardless, not everyone has the ability to channel mana as years pass by with many bloodlines thinning out. The earlier magic users date back to eons ago with the appearances of the four elements (fire, water, air, and earth). Those with magic were called Magus due to their ability to conjure powerful spells over time.
In modern times, Magus has evolved into more complex variations.
Even so, while those who are born into ancient family bloodlines have a higher chance of possessing the ability to channel mana and many aspects from their bloodlines, those from families that possess no bloodline have a chance, albeit lower, of channeling mana. It's rare but not uncommon as the first of a family bloodline would have weaker control and channel as they have no prior ancestors that can channel mana before them.
However, even if a child is born from an ancient bloodline, there are chances of being not able to channel mana, enabling three classes of people in Sol Imperium; active, dormant, and extinct.
The active class is the ones that have access to their mana and are able to cast the simplest spells to the most complex and powerful ones while the dormant class are ones that have their mana at rest. In some cases, extinct.
Channeling mana is not of literally manipulating the mana in the air, however. It's the ability to draw out the mental and spiritual essence of an individual to shape it into its desired form or shape such as spells, runes, curses, and many more. Similar to one's life essence, there's a limit of this ability to channel mana that results in death.
Thus, enabling the dormant class to advance to active class as their dormant ability can be awakened through several processes. Life and death situations, heavy stress on the mind, body, and spirit, and two of the most common methods; meditation and coaxing. Most prefer the meditation method considering that through coaxing, there's a higher chance of forming a magical bond to that individual.
Ryou is aware of the existence of magic in their world, has a grasp of the basics and theories behind people flooding traffic, blowing up their significant others to the roof and, at one time, having their hair burst into an inferno, and acknowledges it as an immaterial essence of an individual's life.
But he's unable to understand it fully, being an extinct class and all.
Not much is known about the extinct class. Extinct class is of people that, unfortunately, can never wield the ability to channel mana throughout their lifetime. Throughout the years of studying and making sense of mana, it's discovered that within an individual there exist reserves that are used to gather mana in the air and converge it as their own until it's been restored to one's max capacity. Using this known concept about mana veins, it is said that extinct class had their mana veins damaged when young, especially when it's still undeveloped, making it impossible to repair or heal.
