For a few minutes, you and Jack sat on the edge of the opening in the floor. The whole time, Jack kept his flashlight pointed down in the opening. Both of had remained silent, listening intently in case Mark needed help. During this time, it was quite silent down there. While Jack knew that Mark was more of the stealthy type, you didn't and the silence worried you.
Glancing over at Jack, you waited for him to look at you. When he did, he noticed your eyes full of worry. He places a hand on your shoulder and gives you a gentle squeeze. He knew that Mark had this, even though he wished that his friend would let him help him out every once in a while. Everyone's luck had to run out eventually.
There is movement out of the corner of your eyes. Redirecting your attention, you and Jack peer down into the opening. Not a moment later, Mark emerges. He looks up at you both and nods. You and Jack notice the small blood splatters on his arms, but he appears to be fine which gives you a sense of relief. Carefully, you slide down into the opening, dropping down beside Mark. Jack shuts off his flashlight and drops down after you.
Once you both stand up, you turn around and face towards the direction that Mark had gone to take care of the infected. There were five bodies that were scattered across the room. From what you both could see, each of them had a wound through their temples.
"I must say," Jack crossed his arms over his chest and smirked, looking back at Mark. "I'm quite impressed, Mr. Fischbach."
Mark rolled his eyes, playfully shoving his friend. "I bet you are, Mr. McLoughlin. Though you shouldn't be. If I do remember correctly, you were the one who said we could handle it."
Jack scoffed. "And if you remember correctly, I did say 'we'."
The two walked over towards the door and you followed. They opened the door and made their way down, Mark in the front and Jack right behind you. At the base of the stairs, Mark turned to his left and the light from his flashlight landed on a stack of wooden pallets. You could see the jagged edge of the tunnel peeking out from behind the stack. The two men shoved the stack to the side, fully revealing the tunnel. They tell you to crawl in first, assuring you that it is safe. You do as you're told and wait for them to crawl in behind you. Once they're inside, they pull the stack of palettes back in front of the opening.
The tunnel is short in height for a few feet, but soon opens up enough for you all to stand. It feels good to stand; crouching can really take a toll on your knees and calves. You three press on down the dark tunnel. As you walk, you can't help but wonder who it was that made all of these tunnels and how.
"Ya know, Mark," Jack says, breaking the silence. "I was thinkin' that when we get back maybe we could take it easy for a while."
Mark chuckled. "You want to take it easy? Please... you're the most energetic person I know."
"I just figured since Ray's out of the picture and all, that means we're the top smugglers in the zones. Plus, we won't have to do too much once we get the payment. Need I remind you that you, Mr. Grumpy Pants, like to lay low."
You fight back a smirk, ducking your head down and letting some strands of hair fall over your face. Mark shakes his head. "We'll see."
After about an hour of walking, the tunnel shortens again and comes to a ledge. From a few feet back, you can hear running water which causes a lump to form in your throat. A memory comes to the front of your mind from before everything happened. The summer of the year that everything went down, your mom had talked about signing you up for swimming lessons. Unfortunately, due to her work schedule she never got around to doing so. Therefore, you never learned how to swim.
