My Wings

25 2 1

Icy fingers
clutch my shoulders
The fire
which had kept me going
For so long
Becomes nothing
But a trail of smoke
In the air

Sadness doesn't let me wait
She hurried me back
Into the forest
Where the moonlight
can hardly reach

In the darkest shadows
We come to a cabin
She pushes me inside

Apathy greets me
Grabbing my hand
Asking me to stay
Only for a while
A seat she offers
But I refuse
I turn to leave

Fear blocks the door
"The world is cold," he says,
"It changes every day,
You'll never know
Quite who you are"

I beg them to let me go
They swear they never will

The door creaks
Hinges scream
A ray of light
Gentle but strong
Squeezes through the darkness

Hope takes my hand
She pulls me away
From the prison
Where I couldn't stay

We run
The branches pulling our hair
The leaves crunching
With every step

She begins to fade
There is no path
No trail
I am lost

But Faith pulls Hope
back to me

Suddenly we
are at the edge
Of the woods
A meadow stretches
Before our eyes
Small flowers sing
In the breeze

Hope leads me
through the field
And we find we have come
to a steep mountain
We know
We must climb

Our legs ache
This hurts too much
Could we be going
the wrong way?

But when we reach the top
I know this is
where we need to be
The sun has just broken
through the dark wall
Of stars and space
And from the cool grass
A cross is risen

Hope releases my hand
I walk alone to the cross

I kneel

Two figures walk towards me
They take my arms

Love and Joy
Become my wings

I soar above the captive ground

I beg them not to let go
The promise they never will
