Ludendorff scanned the crowd of soldiers during the chant. When he browsed to the left, he saw something that was a bit off, like a needle in a haystack. It was a lone MP40 barrel pointing right at him. The general then hit the floor, and Panzer pulled the trigger. Gunter shook as the gunshots roared him his ears. Ludendorff slowly, and carefully came up to his feet and saw a figure run in the left side ally way. But he only saw feet before the body vanished. Panzer ran as fast as his legs would allow him. He stopped when he reached the other side, and panicked. He heard a gunshot in the distance. He knew he was a marked man, and an army of ruthless, disciplined soldiers who are command under a general who wouldn't stop until his victims were in hell, was after him. "WHAT HAVE I DONE?" He whispers. He then looked to his left, and saw 2 Nazis walking, looking for him.
"Hey! Stop right there!" They say
Panzer froze quickly, he knew he was done.
"What are you doing here private?" A nazi said. Panzer was frozen and emotionless.
"We have to get back to city Hall"
Panzer then followed them back, accepting his death. He reflected on life, and how he regretted joining the army even though his mother begged him not to. Now, he won't see her again. He imagines her crying when she finds out about her young son's death, and he held back tears himself.
"Did you hear about that traitor?" A nazi asked him. Panzer shook "n-no...who was it?"
"Lance corporal Aston Gunter"
Panzer stopped "w-who?...
"Yeah. Ludendorff executed him."
Panzer froze, and got on his knees.
"N-n-no..." He cried on the dead concrete
"What's wrong private? Gunter confessed, and then got shot. It serves him right."
Panzer was silent. Knowing that Gunter sacrificed his life so that Panzer can have his. Panzer and Gunter have known each other since early childhood. Panzer got them in trouble, and Gunter got them out of it. That's the way it was. Even on that day In Stalingrad. Not a day passes by without Panzer crying for his best friend.
