Chapter Two : Holes in Apologizes

Rebecca

Rebecca, tried to hold back tears and the sniffs of her nose as she walked up the steps of her home which was located in the middle of nowhere. Just a cornfield that was close by the beach. The

small yellow cape was all her single mother could manage. Working on hard labor, even if she was white. Her daughters were interracial, black and white. Their father was long gone from the

picture. Sometimes Rebecca's mother would tell her and her sister, Maia, that they're father just wasn't ready for that package called responsibility and parenthood.

Over time she had to believe it.

Rebecca, dried her eyes and walked inside the shabby home. Hearing the floor boards creak under her shoes that were boots covered in sand, managing to clean them up on the carpet before

entering. She hoped her older sister, Maia, who still lived with them at age 23 wouldn't notice the redness of her eyes. Maia... a lot of people in town would question why a girl at 23 wasn't married and off to living with a husband. Was it because she was half black? A mutt? As they would call it. Or was it because her older sister was fatefully raped at the age of 17? Simply coming home from school and crossing paths with three drunk men who took advantage of the innocent teenage girl.

Rebecca, was only 12 when that happened to her sister. Noticing the change of personality in her sister that used to be bubbly and sweet with a smile always spread on her plump lips. Only until

time came to her and she began to be bitter and sarcastic towards all. But, Maia's love for her family never changed. She still watched over Rebecca and helped her mother work at the sewing

factory.Rebecca, sniffed as she walked up the stairs, only to be interrupted by Maia, "Why are your eyes red?" She asked with suspicion.

Rebecca, turned slowly as she faced her older sister. Maia, resembled Rebecca a bit. The same coffee toned skin with a small pointed nose and large cat like eyes. Their lips were small and pouty,

the lower lip always jutted out a bit. However, they had different hair. Rebecca's hair was the color of dark chocolate and around the beginning of her shoulders. They would bounce with her

whenever she'd walk.

While, Maia's hair was wild and untamed with the color of a Raven's feather. Pitch black and almost blue in the sun. She'd always wear her hair in a low ponytail, letting it sprout at the nape of

her neck in a wild frizz. Maia, was also taller that Rebecca. Only by where Rebecca's head was at her lower neck.

The two sisters looked alike in certain ways, but their personalities were a bit different.

"Were you crying?" Maia questioned again with concern as her thick brows were knitted together.

Rebecca, shook her head stubbornly, "No, I just have a twig or you know, like some stick or something." She said, cleaning out her eye as if pulling out a stick.

Maia, wasn't stupid. She frowned and slapped Rebecca's hand away from her eyes and cupped her face, "What happened? Tell me, please." She said with sincerity.

The younger sister sniffed as she shook her head in disappointment, "It was nothing... I was with Tommy, and-" She broke off, beginning to cry like a child who found out that Santa Claus wasn't

real. Maia, without a question, took her in her arms and gently hugged her, comforting her in her best form of silence until Rebecca, was done crying.
