Chapter Seven : Loose Ends
Rebecca
Rebecca's heart seemed to clench and her stomach drop to the deepest pit as her jaw hung open and her eyes went wide. She slowly looked over at Tommy, her eyes still wide as plates.
Tommy clenched his jaw, as if to keep it from hanging open. He didn't even look at her, he only looked at his parents with disbelief.
"Are you joking?" Rebecca suddenly breathed, still staring at Tommy with utter confusion and surprise.
"Rebecca... You're eighteen and times are hard... I.. The sewing factory isn't going very well and well, the Jones, decided that you two could marry. Tommy, is going to own the family business
soon, and everything will be better." Her mother explained with furrowed brows in worry and pursed lips.
"Maia? Did you know about this?" Rebecca asked now moving her eyes towards her sister who was gulping and looking around as if not wanting to listen.
She didn't utter one word.
"Dad. Rebecca, is my best friend... Mom, you know this too." Tommy said with a shake of his head and scoff, "I've known her ever since we were children, you cannot just marry us like that-"
"Well, isn't that better? You two know each other and possibly you'll fall in love." His father shrugged as if no care in the world.
Tommy, let out another mocking scoff, "What is-"
"Do not make me do what I did last night. Shut up and don't utter one more word." His father snapped with threatening in his tone.
"You don't have to treat him that way," Rebecca snapped at his father.
Tommy's eyes darted over to Rebecca, gulping as he could sense the anger radiate from his father.
"Excuse me?" He hissed with his meaty fists clenching.
"Charlie, please-"
"Shut up, Holly." He cut his wife off with a bark.
Rebecca, still didn't back away as her jaw clenched and her own anger was swelling within her, "I said," She hissed, "you don't have to treat him that way." She repeated with a menacing voice.
Tommy's father burst, standing from the table and barking, "AND WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO?" He shouted, "I might have married you to my son, but listen here,
Missy. YOU DO NOT TALK TO ME THAT WAY, I AM YOUR FATHER IN LAW-"
"AND, I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK." Rebecca shouted right back, storming out of the house with her tiny fists curled and slamming the door as she walked out. Tears of anger and yet confusion
from knowing she was going to marry, Tommy, running down her face. With a huff she said on the front steps of the porch. Holding her knees to her chest and looking up at the night sky. Her
whole body shivering fro the chilly weather, until a coat wrapped around her figure and brought her to warmth. The coat smelled of mint and pine wood. Easily, knowing it was Tommy.
He smiled sheepishly, "May I join?" He asked, referring to sit down next to her. Despite her tears and anger.
Rebecca, sniffed and nodded with a weak smile, that didn't touch her eyes. "Of course." She whispered. Her voice a bit hoarse from screaming.
