Chapter 6

A complete and utter wreck

After that they were both a mess. Maddie refused to come out of her room, only opening up her door to grab the food her mom left outside so she wouldn't starve. All she did was cry. Her mom was really worried so worried that she ended up on the Hyland door step a few days later. Josh's mom Kelly let her in of course, she was worried about her own son. Josh had came out of his room but he hadn't been out the house since it all happened and he barely spoke. He had lost his spark. Josh watched Mellissa come in and sat outside the living room door listening in to the two mothers conversations. He wasn't doing it to be nosey, he just needed to know how Maddie was doing. "She is a complete and utter wreck Kelly, I don't know what to do!" Mellissa told Kelly helplessly. A complete and utter wreck. He couldn't get the words out of his head. He knew he had to put it right but he didn't know how. Josh had tried sending gifts but he knew Maddie wouldn't want them. He knew he had to ask his sisters, they were girls after all.

Back at the Zieglers house Mackenzie had been sat outside Maddie's bedroom door for at least a few hours now. "Maddie please just open up!" Mackenzie pleaded. It was hard for Mackenzie to see anyone like this but since it was Maddie it made it a hundred times worse. Sure the pair would fight with each other all the time but really they were best friends when it came down to it. "Look Maddie, moms out and I won't tell her I came in! I'm just really worried about you Mads, it's killing me" Mackenzie whispered as the tears fell down. Maddie had always been the tougher of the two, she was Mackenzie's rock and honestly Mackenzie didn't know what to do since Maddie was falling apart. Kenzie jumped at the click of the lock and sprang to her feet. Maddie opened the door and motioned for her to come in. As soon as Kenzie stepped in Maddie sharply closed the door and locked it fast. Mackenzie watched as Maddie turned around. It was like looking at a clone of Maddie. She had the same hair, same face, same body but she lacked something, she lacked the thing that made her the Maddie everyone knew and loved, life. She was wearing sweats and a baggy t-shirt, her hair was standing up in awkward places and was extremely messy. Her skin seemed paler and her eyes a bit duller. She had tear stains on her cheek. "Aw Maddie," was all Kenzie could say. She wrapped her arms around her big sister as Maddie cried into her shoulder. Mackenzie fought back the tears and Maddie got under the covers in her bed and signalled for Kenzie to join her. Whenever Mackenzie was sad she would lie beside Maddie in her bed and just tell her everything and Maddie would listen until the very end before saying a single word. Mackenzie knew that's what Maddie wanted her to do for her now. She crawled in beside her and Maddie wrapped her arms around her younger sister. "Does everyone know?" Maddie asked hesitantly. Maddie was always worried about what people thought of her. "They just know something happened between you and Josh, everyones really worried about you Mads," Mackenzie replied softly. Maddie sighed. "He kissed another girl Kenz, and I was right there I saw it all" Maddie told her holding back the tears. Mackenzie didn't know what to say. "You have no idea what that's like. You feel so worthless and ugly and it hurts right at the heart" Maddie took a deep breath. "He's the first guy I ever loved and I wasn't good enough for him," Maddie sobbed into Mackenzies head.

"Brooke, Paige, I need to talk to you both," Josh yelled out into the hallway. Around 5 minutes later his two sisters appeared in the hall both curious of what had happened. Josh told them it all. How hurt he was, how he realised he was in love for the first time and how he blew it. Paige and Brooke weree shocked. Josh wasn't one to show much emotion and they had never seen him break down like that. They realised then that Maddie and Josh had to get back together. Both girls had grown close to Maddie and they were best friends so they knew that if Maddie would have heard what Josh had said to them, it would put them back on track. That's when Paige decided on a letter. That way Josh didn't have to say it straight to her but Maddie would still know. Also Brooke added it was something Maddie could keep forever if things ever went wrong again. Josh wasn't toosure but he didn't have much choice, he needed Maddie back.
