"Crap!" Trent screeched as he realized he'd woken up late. His dorm mate had already made his way towards the testing building while Trent was still sleeping. He hopped out of bed, threw on his jacket and shoes, and dashed over towards the testing room, but the doors were locked. He banged on the doors, but no one came. Unfortunately, the door didn't have glass windows, and the other glass windows were glazed over so they were useless.
"Sir, what are you doing?" a guard asked as he approached Trent.
"Oh... Hello. I was trying to get into the building. You see, I accidentally woke up late, and I might of missed my test, and-"
"Ah, I see. Follow me," the man said in response. He wore a long, black coat with enough pockets to fit an elephant in. They wandered over around to the front, then out into a small clearing between the front gate and the campus's outer wall. All of sudden, Trent knew what was happening.
"I'm sorry, but why am I here? I didn't do anything wrong-"
"You were late," a deep voice stated. "And that is unacceptable." The man crept out from the shadows. He had blond hair and a black suit on with the symbol of the agricultural district on the front.
"Light, I apologize for being late. My clock didn't go off this morning. I'm sure my father can get this all sorted out," Trent spat out quickly in an attempt to persuade Light to let him off the hook. It didn't seem to work too well.
"I understand, but you weren't just a few minutes late... They've already started the tests." Trent looked at Light and shivered with fear. The tests already started? That couldn't of happened.
"I-I'm sorry, sir. If you c-could just talk to my fa-"
"Your father cannot help you out of this one," he stated firmly as he put a hand in his coat pocket and felt around for something. A tear fell down Trent's face. After all of this... he failed because of a simple mistake? He already knew what was in Light's pocket thanks to the knowledge his father shared with him before he was sent off to the Examination. His father seemed to know everything there was to know about the tests. Trent wondered how angry his father would be if he found out his eldest had just failed the Examination due to a simple alarm clock error. Either way, it wouldn't matter to Trent anymore.
To think that a young boy like Trent with a father who was a man of high stature ended up failing the Examination anyway is quite strange. Yes, in the first week, many students who either couldn't take the pressure or who just didn't care were eliminated, but now that the 'weakest' had been rid of, all that's left was to find the best of the best, which meant harsh rules and difficult tests like the ones given now were only going to get worse.
Meanwhile, Laurel, Margaret, and Richie all sat in the corner of the small waiting room away from other students.
"Laurel, I just wanted to apologize for... accusing you of having false intentions," Richie said with the hope to prevent her from going against him. Little did he know that she was already against him.
"Aw, thanks, Lil' Rich! I'm glad we could make up before this test commences. It'd be just so awful if we still were on bad terms when the results came, now wouldn't it be?" Laurel replied with a sneaky smile. Richie looked away in despair. He'd known her for quite some time now, and he knew when she was being incredibly sarcastic. This was one of those times.
"Haha, yea. I'm g-glad you guys could make up," Margret chimed in. She tried to improve the mood, but she also knew that that was impossible. She'd also known Laurel for a while and knew that there was no stopping her once she started, but it was worth it to try. This was going to be one long day.
