A rug, a sunburst of roots, and an acorn padlock. The river's last warmth is waiting. Twiggy and Willow pushed the heavy woven rug aside. Dust rose in the firelight. Carved into the heartwood floor was a sunburst - spiraling roots, endless and perfect - a carving that matched the compass exactly. In its center: an ancient iron hatch sealed with an acorn padlock. Twiggy set the compass into it. The amber teardrop aligned. Clack. The hatch lifted on dark hinges. A shaft breathed cold earth and old magic, living roots curling down into shadow. Inside, on a small stone ledge, sat a crystal orb holding a tiny, glowing ember - the last living warmth of the river. Etched around the rim: "Feed the flame with roots of tree, and ice shall break." Twiggy knew. The black pot on the hearth - her family's secret winter stew, root vegetables simmered slow, golden broth. She ladled the golden potion over the ember. The orb blazed - blinding light. Golden heat surged through the floorboards, under the snow, through the great central root, all the way to the frozen river. A thunderous crack split the night. Black ice shattered. Water sang.
