He once saw her sitting on a bench looking sad, a foreign mood to her. Like any good friend would, he sat down next to her and tried to ask why she was sad.

“I don’t get sad,” she answered. “My feelings are translated into colors. Like, instead of saying I’m happy, I say I’m orange.”

“Okay,” he said, “so what color are you feeling right now?”

“Pale yellow,” she said.

“Not blue?” he mused. “I’m surprised.”

“Not blue,” she agreed. “I think blue is a cheerful color.”

“Why is pale yellow a sad color?” he asked.

“Because it’s ugly,” she said after a moment’s thought. “Everybody thinks pale yellow is ugly and no one likes it, so pale yellow is sad.”

He rubbed her back as a comforting gesture. “Well,” he said, getting up from the bench, “I hope you feel more orange the next time I see you, Red.”

She laughed, “I will. You too, Jake.”

“I’ll try.”

Red's moods had the blessing of being able to fluctuate, but no matter how hard he tried, he always felt pale yellow.
