The next time he saw Red, she was sitting on a bench that overlooked a lake. He sat down next to her, his hands in the pockets of his red sweatshirt.
"Hey, Red," he said, notifying her of his presence. She looked over to him and smiled.
"Hi, Jake," Red greeted him before returning her gaze to the water. "The shade of blue that the water is is gorgeous, don't you think? It's absolutely perfect."
Jake didn't like throwing words like "gorgeous" and "perfect" around willy nilly, but he had to agree with Red. There was something about the way the setting sun met the blue water that made it seem like nothing was wrong with the world in that moment. It was a childlike innocence that Jake hadn't possessed in years.
"Whatcha doing here?" he asked her.
"I could ask you the same thing, you know," Red pointed out. Truth be told, Jake had come with the intention of seeing Red, but he couldn't tell her that.
"I asked you first," he said, hoping that Red couldn't see the pink color that was beginning to creep into his cheeks.
"I love this lake. I always come here to clear my mind," Red explained. "Certain shades of blue have a calming effect on the human mind, did you know that?"
Jake grinned and said, "See, this is why I love you, Red. Every time I'm with you, you teach me something new, whether it's completely pointless or about life or about myself."
Red smiled. "You love me?" she asked, poking his side playfully.
"Shut up and watch the sunset!"
Red laid her head on Jake's shoulder, and they watched the sunset together in silence.
