Chapter One

The day we won the strike, I became the Queen of Brooklyn. We rode out of Manhattan in Governor Roosevelt's carriage and into Brooklyn, talking the whole way.

"I want you to become my second." Spot told me.

"And take Checkers' position? No way!" I refused.

"He told me that if I wanted to, he'd be more than happy to step down."

"Really?" I asked.

"Really."

"I will, but will they be mad at me? None of them really like me all that much."

"Believe me, they like you more than they let on." he said.

"OK then."

"Miss Burke, Mr. Conlon. Here's your stop." Roosevelt said.

"Thank you so much, Governor!" I exclaimed.

"Please, call me Teddy!"

"OK." I repiled shyly. We shook hands and I was helped out of the carriage, not like I needed help, though. Spot got off and we thanked Teddy again. Once the carriage started leaving, I waved goodbye. When it was out of sight, we walked to the Lodging House, where Spot ordered everyone to the crate tower to announce the announcement.

Once everyone was there, Spot and I climbed up to the top of the crate tower. Spot quieted them down and said, "Everyone listen up! You all know Archer, and all of you know Manhattan, where she's from. Checkers has informed me that if I want to, I can appoint Archer as second. I have decided to take that opportunity. From this point on, Archer is the official second to the leader of Brooklyn."

"I just wanna say that I don't want to take Checkers' position, but dat we can both be second. I know it hasn't been done before, but there's a first time for everything, right? Is that ok?" I turned to Spot.

"I guess so." he replied. "Checkers, get up here."

When Checkers got up there, he stood next to me. I turned to him and we spitshook. Then we spitshook with Spot, one at a time. After that, everyone dispersed. Spot, Checkers, and I walked back to the Lodging House and talked until we fell asleep.

I know this chapter was really short, but believe me, it's gonna get better, I think.
