Zayden's POV
"I trusted you!"
"And what happened?"
"These crap-bags showed up is what happened, Zayden!" Alexa flailed her arms around, like a crazy lady
Our friends had barely been gone for a few seconds and Alexa was already shouting, her face red and I wished it was because of the cold but it was just due to the fact that she was boiling with anger. She grunted and mumbled words under her breath as she cleaned around the apartment. I followed her into the kitchen.
"And?" I asked my voice steady
"AND?! And you told me you were done with all of that but apparently you weren't"
"I am"
"Oh, and it just happened to slip your mind that you were.. what? Friends? with these guys?"
"I'm not"
The guys helped her pack the blankets and pillows before they left so there really wasn't much for her to do, when she saw that the living room was all neat she headed to her bedroom.
"I already fixed your room"
"Why!" She looked at me, frustration clear in her eyes "Right, maybe freddie knows he's your best buddy isn't he!"
"I honestly don't know why they showed up tonight"
"Recruiting"
I scoffed, irritation leaking into my voice "Oh, Alex very mature of you, jumping to conclusions"
"What is that not what they wanted to talk to you about? Did they just want to check up on you? Make sure you're doing fine?" She raised her eyebrows at me like she was talking to a 5 year old
"They were just messing around, it's the last we see or hear of them"
"Yea, you said that the last time"
"I don't control them you know"
"I don't care Zayden but they better not get anywhere near the group and you better make sure of that" She said sharply "you just had to get involved again, didn't you?" Alexa said in a low voice as she sat on the couch and breathed in deeply
"Thanks for trusting me, very friend-likey of you" I snapped as I put on my coat and shoved my phone into the pocket of my dark jeans.
"That's not even a word. Where are you going?"
"Work."
"But it's your da-" I didn't hear the last of her sentence as I shut the door behind me. It was my day off.
--
I pushed the door open and set the grocery bags in the kitchen, I spotted my aunt's car outside so I knew she was home. All the lights in her house were lit, a weird habit of hers, and I noticed she hung a few new paintings on the cream colored walls.
"Marcela!"
"Zayden?" She walked into the kitchen and side hugged me as I put away the stuff I bought "Oh, honey you shouldn't've troubled yourself"
I smiled and shook my head at her, I opened the fridge and pointedly looked at the empty shelfs "Point made"
She chuckled "I've missed you! Why haven't you been visiting your beloved aunt more often?"
"I'm swamped with university stuff," I shrugged "you know how it is"
When I was done putting away the groceries I took a long look at her, it seemed to me as if she didn't age; her hair was still the auburn color it always was, her face didn't show any wrinkles except for the ones by her eyes when she smiled and her physique hadn't changed since the last time I saw her, still petite.
"Anyways, I came by to make sure our day-in on Friday is still up?"
"Friday.." She tapped at her phone "Oh, honey, raincheck? I've got a huge meeting"
My face fell but I quickly regained a neutral expression "What's the date on Friday, Marcela?"
She hummed and went back to scrolling through her phone looking for the date "The 23rd"
"Ring any bells?" I asked impatiently
She frowned but then her eyes widened "Oh my god! I'll postpone the meeting. Yes, a day-in, on Friday" She smiled softly
"I have to go to work,"
"Oh, so soon?"
"Yea, I'm actually late. See ya"
"Bye, honey."
I started the engine of the car and backed up from the driveway. I was going to go to Alexa's place to rant about how my aunt had managed to forget we had a day-in planned and had also forgotten that we've done this every year for my parents. When I was a kid I thought I'd forget them because they were dead but my aunt thought it'd be a good idea if every year on the 23rd of December we would do something together so that it would act as a reminder. Now, that I'm older I wish that I could forget all about the accident. I wanted to rant about how my aunt didn't know enough about me to know that today was my day off or how she was too busy with the company to remember to fill her fridge up, but then I remembered that Alexa was mad at me because Freddie had showed up at her place out of the blue. What did he want? Why did he feel the need to see me after so long? I felt the anger seep through me as my hands tightened on the steering wheel and my foot pushed on the gas, the car changed gears as it sped up; the air coming in from the window, although cold, was calming as it ruffled my hair. The speed of the car kept increasing and I noticed the quiet the air around me held.
Freddie's words replayed in my head 'You miss it don't you?'
'No' I thought but my body seemed to disagree as I pushed my foot harder on the pedal urging the car to go faster. I maneuvered my way around the other cars on the road and from the corner of my eye I spotted a white one with black stripes.
'It's in your blood, kid'
'No'
Before long, the flashing blue and red lights appeared behind me, the cop named my car model and asked me to pull over through the speakers. I slowed down but I couldn't help the smirk that formed on my face. I reached for my wallet and took out my license and ID.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

SO! Who is this Freddie guy that has got Alexa so angry at Zayden? And how does he have so much power that Alexa's trust towards Zayden wavered when he showed up?
