"Mother," I yelled slamming the front door. She comes staggering out of the kitchen beer bottle in hand.
"You didn't come meet my new principal." "So? I had better things to do, " she says taking a swig.
I scoffed, "are we still going to dinner at the neighbors?" "No, your father said he had a surprise."
"Where's Lane?" "Out." She doesn't know. She doesn't care.
                      -----------------
Slam!
"I'm home." Brilliant. Surprise time. I took my time walking down the stairs because the surprise probably isn't for me.
"Hi Laura." "Hi dad." "Well Angela are you ready for your surprise?" Mom came stumbling in. Dad handed her a beautiful diamond ring.
I think the sparkle of the ring caught her attention because for a moment she was acting kind of normal.
Then she snapped back to her drunken self. "Where'd you get this? Did you steal it?"
"No, just another shift at the 'company.' "Dad, did you get Lane and I anything?"
"Of course not," he scoffed,"this ring costed almost a weeks paycheck. You know your mother is most important."
"Yeah she's most important but you cheat on her every night," I mumbled.
"What?" "Nothing."
I turned and walked up to my room, before I could shut my door I was interrupted. "Laura?"
"What Lane?" "Is it true? What you said? Dad cheats on mom every night?"
"You would notice if you weren't caught up on drinking and smoking with your so called friends."
I slammed my door and locked it.
He kept banging on the door," Laura!"
"Leave me alone."
I put in earphones to block out everything going on around me.
--------------------
Slam! I opened one eye. Since I'm the only stable one in the house, I'll be the one to make sure it's not a burglar.
I tiptoed down the stairs quietly so I wouldn't wake mother, who was passed out on the couch.
I turned the corner into the kitchen to see a tall blonde girl standing there. "Who are you," I ask which caused her to jump.
"Amber. I'm a uh friend of your fathers," she says looking away from my eyes.
"Why are you here at two in the morning?" "Beca-" "Laura? What are you doing up," dad asked nervously.
"I came to see what the noise was down here. Why? Did I interrupt you," my voice had disgust written all over it.
How dare he bring another woman here. Especially with mom right on the couch. She's not the most stable but still, how could he do that?
"I think you need to go to bed Laura. And don't your you dare say a word to your mom or brother about this. You here me?"
"You're an awful person. You know that?" "Laura I don't need your comments. Go to bed."
"Fine. I'll see you in the morning when you tell mom how delicious breakfast was and how much you love her."
I stomped up the stairs and slammed my door. Who cares if I wake mom? Maybe she'll catch him in the act.
                 -----------------------
All the makeup in the world won't make you less insecure.
My eyes were bright red from me crying and also scrubbing them trying to get the makeup off my face.
Second day of school wouldn't want people to wonder why or if I'm sad.
My face is still red when I'm done but there is nothing I can do about.
I walk to my closet to decide what to wear. I throw  a pair of jeans and a grey sweatshirt.
I slip on my grey combat boots and leave my hair in its natural wave. I don't want to go downstairs and face my family.
I know that dad is going to be complimenting mom and she's going to be pretending to love him.
Lane will be in la la land. Me? I'll try my best to be invisible to them.
I walk down the stairs to see all eyes on me. "What," I ask looking directly at dad. He knows I'm not happy with him.
"Hi hon," mom said walking over to me, "sleep well?" "Not really." Dad gave me a glare.
"Well that's to bad! I slept pretty well," he said getting up to put his plates in the sink.
"Good for you dad," I say going to grab my backpack. He glares at me as if he's shooting daggers at me.
"I'm gonna go," I say quickly heading for the door. "What the rus-" i cut mom off.
I had to get out of there before I had an outburst and told mom everything.
Then dad would have been furious at me. He would've lost his temper. I can just imagine.
Walking to school I still feel like dad is glaring daggers at me. Joy now dad will be in my mind all day.
Can't wait to get to school and think about something besides my messed up family.
