Two days later....

Do you ever feel forgotten? Especially on certain days, like your birthday. That's what I was feeling right now.
My family was sitting at the table doing their normal things. Smoke a cigarette, drink alcohol, read the newspaper while you have a lipstick stain from another woman on your shirt.
"Morning guys," I say while walking down the stairs in my high waisted jeans and a nice blouse with some heeled boots.
I'm only wearing this because it's my birthday and today is supposed to be 'special.'
"Morning." "Do you know what today is?" "Saturday." "That's it?" "What else would it be?" "Unbelievable," I mumble to myself.
"I'm going over to Ross's. I'll see you later," I say opening the front door and then slamming it shut.
A few minutes later I arrived at Ross's apartment. I knocked on the door multiple times before he opened.
I tried wiping my tears but they just kept coming back. "Hey, what's wrong," Ross asks while letting me come in.
"They forgot my birthday Ross, my family forgot my birthday." "Why would they do something like that?"
"Because they're liars, the people you met the other night. Yeah they're not like that at all. My mom drinks half the day until she's drunk out of her mind."
"My brother hangs out in a bunch of gangs and calls them his friends and he drinks and smokes just like my mom," I say while balling.
"My dad goes with other women and does who knows what! I just caught him last week in the middle of the night with a girl."
"My mom was right there on the couch too!" "Wow Laura. I didn-" "So yes I have a messed up family and I understand if you ever want to see me again."
"Of course I want to see you again," he says pulling me into a hug. "And Laura?" "What?" "Happy birthday." "Thanks."
"Can I tell you something?" "Anything." "I thought about what you said, about going back to Texas. And I'm gonna go see my mom and sister."
"Ross that's great!" "Yeah it is. But I want you to come with me." "Why?" "Because you're my friend and I don't want you to be here with your family without me."
"But Ross, I don't want to intrude, I'll be fine." "Laura no. You're going. Please."
"But Ros-" "Laura, just say yes." "Okay I'll go. When are you going?" "Next week, spring break." "Sounds great."
"I'm gonna use the restroom," I say lifting myself from the couch. I walk down the hall and into the bathroom.
I look in the mirror at my smudged makeup. Suddenly everything comes to my head. Family. School. Ross. Ross's family.
I grip my head and let out a silent scream, and think of what it would sound like if it wasn't silent.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I finally release my ears and look at myself. I fix my makeup and hair. I exit the bathroom acting as if nothing every happened.
"Hey Laur?" "What?" "Can I take you somewhere?" "Sure, why not," I say grabbing my purse.
While we are on the way to wherever he's taking me, in case you were wondering Ross and I have become close.
And no we are not dating. Even though we went on a date, we're just friends.
Ross pulls into the parking lot and a smile spreads across his face. "Dairy Queen?" "Of course. It's your birthday," he says dramatically and then gets out of the car.
He walks around and opens my door, "shall we?" I get out of the car and follow him to the door. He opens the door and gives me a goofy grin.
We walk up to the counter, we  are greeted by an older woman who looks around 50. "Can I get a small ice cream cake?
And can you put happy birthday Laura on it?"
"Yes sir, that will be $10.50," she says looking at us. Ross hands her the money. "You guys are a cute couple."
"I wish when I was young my boyfriend would've bought me an ice cream cake for my birthday," she says handing Ross the change.
I can feel my cheeks heat up as she keeps talking. Finally, our cake! "Thanks," Ross says grabbing the cake and taking it to a table.
"Dig in. It's your birthday."  "Thanks for this." "You want me to sing?" "I'd ra-" "Happy  birthday to you," he says starting to smile.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Laura," he says getting some ice cream on his finger.
He puts it on my nose, "happy birthday to you." And I can't help but giggle at this moment.
