I pace back and forth while looking at the clock. Ross will be here in an hour and I'm not even close to being ready.
I have multiple dresses laid out, and when I say multiple I mean two. I don't dress up much.
The choice is between an all white long sleeve dress with a huge cutout in the back, or a solid black dress with lacy sleeves.
My pacing was interrupted when Lane came into my room. "Hey sis," he looked at the dresses," what are you doing?"
"I have a date. And I don't know what to wear. You're a guy, help me." "Okay, um try them on and I'll tell you which one looks better."
I try on the black one first. "It's good, but it also looks like you're going to a funeral."
I scoff, "thanks." "Well I'm just saying. Try on the other one,"he says handing it to me and pushing me back into the bathroom.
A few minutes later I walk back out. Lane looks up and smiles," my work here is done. You look great." I giggle and kiss him on the cheek," thanks bro."
"Maybe we should hang out sometime, you know when we aren't talking about dresses."
"Yeah, I could spend some time with my baby sister." "I'm only your baby sister by one year."
"Yeah yeah. I'm gonna go." "Go where?" "I'm not going out if that's what you're thinking."
"I'm not gonna drink and smoke as much anymore. For you. I'm gonna go sit in the living room and wait for this date of yours to ring the doorbell."
I laugh," you're such a goof." Lane leaves the room and not even a second later Mom enters.
"Oh my gosh honey that dress looks gorgeous on you." "Are you sober?" "Yes. I am. I'm going to stay sober for you."
"I'm gonna be a nice normal mom and not drink and turn into mad woman," she says ruffling my hair.
"I love you mom." "I love you too. Now can i do your hair?" I grinned," yeah," I say while sitting down in my desk chair.
"So this guy, what's his name?" "Ross." "You said he was cute earlier." "Mom," I say giggling. "Hey a mother wants to know."
"Where's dad?" "Work. He texted me he had to stay late because something happened. But he didn't say what."  "Oh." "Alright I'm done."
Ding dong!
"He's here!" Mom jumped up and started waving her hands around, " put your shoes on I'll stall him!" I grabbed my silver heels and slipped them on.
I then checked myself in the mirror.

"So then this is baby Laura's first bath is her little bu- " "Hi Ross," I said interrupting mom's sentence.
He shot up, "hey Laura." My eyes widened, "mom put the photo album away." Ross laughed while coming up to me," you look gorgeous."
"Thanks. Anyway it seems you guys have already met,  but Ross this is my mom, and mom this is Ross."
"Nice to meet you Mrs. Marano." "You too," my mom smiles at Ross. "Im Lane, Laura's older brother. Nice to meet ya man."
"You too bro." "Well should we get going?" "Yeah. We probably should." "Alright, bye mom bye Lane. Love you."
"Love ya L." "Bye sweetie."
I sigh of relief as I close the front door behind me. "Your family seems nice." "Yeah." If only he knew.
"So I know this little club they usually play pretty good music and serve food there. Or we can go somewhere else."
"That sounds nice. I don't need anything fancy. Where is the club?"
"It's downtown." "Okay it sounds fun," I say while looking down at my lap.
After a few minutes of silence and driving we pulled in the parking lot. The club seemed to be in a brick building.
I quickly got out of the car to get with Ross who was standing in front of the car. He extends his arm out a little bit, so I walk closer to him.
We walk into the club with his arm around me and the top of my head under his chin.
As we were walking I caught a glimpse of all the stubble on his chin. That makes him five times more attractive.
We released this position when we got close to the door. We entered the building and the first thing I heard was the song Colors by Halsey.
Ross broke me out of my trance, "do you wanna eat first?" I looked him in the eyes, "yeah." A blonde girl walked me and Ross to a booth a little bit back in the corner.
"You can get whatever you want, I don't care." "What are you going to get?" He glanced at the menu before speaking," I was thinking about getting a bacon cheeseburger."
"Sounds good, I think I'm going to get chicken quesadillas." "That sounds good." Soon a red headed girl came to take our order.
"Hey guys my names Hailey, I'll be your server tonight. Can I start you off with something to drink or are you ready to order?"
"I think we're ready," Ross says looking at me. I nod. "Alright ladies first," the waitress says pulling her notepad out.
"I'm going to have the chicken quesadillas." "Salsa or sour cream with that?" "Sour cream. And I'll have a water to drink."
"Okay and for you sir?" "I'll have the bacon cheeseburger, everything on it. And a water to drink." Alright I'll put those in."
"So Laura should we get to know each other?" "Um sure," I say blushing.
"So how old are you?" "I'm seventeen." "I'm eighteen."
Ugh. What should I ask him? "So does your family live around here?" "No actually they live in Texas." "Oh wow. If you don't mind me asking, how did you end up in New York?"
"My dad died three years ago. It was rough on all of us. Living in a small town in Texas, you couldn't make much money."
"So when I turned sixteen, I got my license and I moved up here. I got a job at a fancy restaurant and every time I got paid I sent the money back to Texas."
"But what about you? Didn't you need the money?" "Yeah but my mom just had my little sister. She needed it more."
"How old is your sister now?" "She's three," he said looking down. "Aw, what's her name?" "Grace." "Do you go back to Texas often?"
"I haven't been back since May." "It's February. That's almost a year since you've seen your family."
"I know." "Go back, see your mom and your sister. I'm sure she'd love to see her big brother."
"Yeah I might soon." "So what about when you go to college? Are you going back home?"
"I already have an apartment here, so I'm most likely staying." "I think you really need to go see them."
Before I could continue the waitress came with our food, "here you go! Anything else?" "No." "Okay enjoy."
We sat in silence while we ate exchanging glances every once and a while. I pushed my plate away when I was done.
The song that blared through the club was Die A Happy Man by Thomas Rhett. "Do you wanna dance?" I glanced at Ross's hand before standing up.
We walked to the middle of the dance floor and started swaying. Every now and then he would spin me around.
"Ready time for the dip," he said spinning me and then gracefully dipping me. We danced to a few more songs then went back to our table.
"It's 11:15, do you wanna head back?" "Yeah we better." We walked to his car hand in hand and got in.
"I had a lot of fun tonight. Thank you." "It was no problem, I'd like to take you out again sometime." "I'd like that."
We soon pulled up to my house. "Thanks again Ross." "Anytime." Before I got out I leaned over and pecked his lower cheek which also caused me to kiss the corner of his lips.
"Bye Laura." "Bye." I walk up my driveway and up the stairs to the porch. I open the door and it's quiet. Weird.
