I awoke to a bashing sound on our door,"Get out of bed you Buggers!!"Shouted Seargent Birmingham, "The Playful muddy training ground awaits ye Precense!" Shouted Birmingham, he almost convinsed us that we were never going to make it to France, I got out of bed and put on my new combate uniform, my round hill helmet and my socks and combat boots, I grabbed my 'violen case' and strapped it on my chest. I ran outside into a dense fog and we were pointed to the Weapon Sap, one by one we recieved our rifles and eventually it was my turn, I held my rifle in my hands and looked at it with excitement, "That be the Lee Enfield bolt action", said the man handing out weapons, "That beauty will save ye life one day", he handed me what seemed to be a long knife, "Whats this for",I said clueless, "You connect that to the front of your rifle, if you out of ammunition then you stab the enemy, that be a Bayonet lad", Said the man, "Alright ya buggers, to the Shooting range.
We all lined up at the sand bags, There was alot of wind, so we struggled to think how we could get our Bullets to hit the straw man with a German helmet. I rested the butt of the rifle into my shoulder, loaded the rifle and closed the bolt, "Fire!!!!!!!" Shouted Birmingham, i squeezed the trigger and retracted the bolt until the very chamber was empty, i got all bullets to hit dead centre, "Bloody good shot Connolly!"Birmingham congratulated me, all my squad members looked at me with pale faces, wide eyes and open mouthes. "Bloody good shot mate"said one of the men,"who might you be?"I said,"Me name be Steven McConnel" Said steven as he shoock my hand, "Hit the mud Pit Boys!!!!"Shouted Seargent Birmingham, we headed towards the pit and I stopped dead in me tracks,"There is no bloody way in hell that im crawling through that shite!" I said,"Its just barbed wire mate,"said steven,"Nothing to be afraid of"It was now half past five in the morning and there was slight visibility, i jumped into the pit and crawled under barbed wire getting cut and brused by people kicking the mud behind them, the men infront of me would seldom kick me by accident, I was the first to get throuh. "How the bloody hell are you doin this Private?"said Birmingham, "Begginers luck, I said clueless of how to answer him. "You took long to get through, but today is R and R, so go to the pub on Occonnell road and meet the other recruits"Shouted Seargent Birmingham from the outpost tower.
