"Thanks Aleks, this is good" I said between long sips of the soup Aleks handed to me. He was a pretty good cook I had to admit, especially not having much to work with.
"No problem, I love making food anyway" Aleks giggled. I slurped up the rest of the food and sighed contently as I placed the empty bowl on my lap. Aleks took it from me and started washing it in the sink. There wasn't any water out of the tap, but Aleks told me they get some from a nearby lake.
"Hey if you get water from a lake, or ocean what do you drink?"
"You'll be surprised how many machines and stores still have drinks lying around."
"I guess I was unlucky to not find any..." Aleks chuckled slightly and places the bowl with the rest of their dishes, in the cupboard under the sink.
Aleks walked over, sitting on the bed opposite mine. "S-So...what's happened to you anyway?"
I looked down, giving a quiet sigh. "Well...I remember being 2 when the news about the apocalypse coming, and of course it was still going on before I was born, but I didn't know that. When I turned 4 thats when they reached us. I had always listened to the news from when I was 2 since the news just always fascinated me. I knew it was getting worse before the creatures reached us. My parents weren't ready though...they were killed right in front of me and my brother."
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself a little as I continued to speak. "Me and my brother ran, he was a few years older than me so I followed his direction. As we turned the corner he was attacked by a few of them...I watched as he two was killed. I didn't know what else to do so I ran and being young I didn't know what else to do but get help. I went to my best friends place and him along with his parents were getting ready to fight. So they handed me a gun, showing me how to use it and where to shoot and we stayed in the house. I sat with my best friend and his family in the top bedroom. I remember asking if everything was going to be ok, but they didn't really answer just gave worried looks towards each other."
The door to the van was opened, making me stop talking. The leader who I still didn't know the name of came in, leaning on a nearby wall with his arms crossed over his chest. "Go ahead, Ive already heard the majority of it. Don't let my presence stop you."
I gulped slightly and nodded, looking down again. "S-So...they burst down the door and found their way to us. Me and my friend were only young, he was 8 I think. So we had problems aiming and shooting and the power of a gun was hard to handle for us. Eventually they killed his parents to and he dragged me up and onto the roof. We looked around the streets of the home we used to live in. Everything was trashed, cars smashed into each other and people screaming and shooting as they were attacked. It was a complete mess... We waited for days on that roof and searched the rest of the houses. We still didn't know how to handle a gun but thankfully found a few. After finding out way into the woods we survived there for a while. Four years passed, I was 8 and my Best friend was killed...not by zombies though, by some people who ambushed us for supplies. I was able to kill some but they got my friend. Two were left and before they could shoot me the zombies came at the sounds of the earlier shots. So I ran. I grew up to where I am now, surviving on lucky finds and kind people." I hadn't noticed that I was gripping the bed sheets until I finished and I siged, relaxing and letting them go.
"Oh..." Aleks whispered to himself, looking down. If the leader wasn't here I'd ask about him, but hopefully another time.
"Hm, your a lucky soul, you know that." I stared at him, trying not to glare. "If I didn't hate seeing Aleks cry then you'd be outta here within seconds. Don't waste my kindness kid." With that he left, almost slamming the door behind him.
"Whats wrong with him?"
"He's just had it rough, with the group and on his own. A lot like you really. I guess your story brought back memories he didn't want." I looked at Aleks and out the window between some of the hammered on boards. He sat on the floor away from the others, punching the wall.
I sighed, "yeah...maybe."
The next day I woke up to gun shots and yelling. I groaned sitting up and stepped outside of the van. They were fighting back some zombies who found them out. Half the group was already dead, Eddie, Aleks, the leader, and some other guy was still fighting back. Eddie shouted at them to get into the van and I quickly looked over to the wheel. I started it up after a few turns and kicks to the machine. They ran inside, shutting and locking the door.
Everyone was there, including the leader so I hit reverse and sped backwards, go an angle and sped forward, breaking the already weakened gate and killing some zombies as I did so. I sped down the streets but stayed in control and sighed as we were far away enough from danger.
I continued to drive, looking back at the others a few times. Eddie had gotten Aleks asleep while the other two talked. I stared out the front window sighing. Everything can end up shitty in seconds, I hate this world now. Maybe it would of been better if I just died...but why didn't I? There were a lot of chances for it to happen, I passed out, I was young, my leg...I guess the world still had something left for me.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, making me jump slightly and look up. The leader sat in the passenger seat, looking forward so I did so to. "Thanks."
I blinked a few times, a little shocked but kept my eyes on the road. "F-for what?"
"Saving me and the rest of us...some stupid idiot attracted one and then a whole fucking herd just appeared."
"Y-yeah...thats what they do."
"What?"
"They travel in groups, or herds, one or two will be obvious and then when they attack or notice something the rest will follow. Its like a pack thing, follow the leader. If the leaders dead, they'll act on their own. Ive seen it before."
"Yeah...I guess I never noticed it but being in those situations...its freaky."
"Yeah...it is...hey I still don't know your name by the way."
"Hm..." He was silent for a while. Why would he be worried about telling me his name? Maybe its a trust thing. "Steven."
I smiled slightly, happy he told me.
We drove for a while and the car was running out of gas. I growled and found a gas station, maybe there would be a can or two in there. I parked near it and grabbed a gun that was on the counter. "I'll be back, we need gas and maybe I can find some food."
"I'll come with you." Steven said, standing and grabbing a gun. I didn't protest and we left the van after checking for zombies. We got into the building and started going through everything. I found a few cans of petrol and Steven was able to find some food and drinks that were still good enough to use.
We hurried back and I filled the van up with Gas. After using half the can I brought it inside the van along with the other two extra ones. Starting the van again after a few tries, I get it going and start driving again.
I yawned. It was becoming dark and everyone was asleep except for Steven. "Hey let me drive for a bit, your tired."
"U-Uh...n-no its fine."
Steven sighed, and forcefully pulling me out and sitting down, continuing to drive. "Sleep."
I sighed in defeat and headed over to the beds. I went to lay climb into the one above Aleks but felt a tug on my pants. I looked down and Aleks was awake. I climbed down, bending down beside him. "What is it?"
"C-Can you...s-sleep with me?"
I smiled, chuckling softly, Aleks was like a little kid sometimes. "Sure"
I climbed in next to him and he snuggled up to me as if I was his mother or something. I sighed, this was all pretty stressful...I guess it was getting to him. I laid my arm over him gently, and stroked his hair like my brother would do to me when I was scared and couldn't sleep.
Eventually I just passed out, letting sleep take over.
