Surviving seems to be harder the closer we get to the ocean, which annoyingly is past the city. We only just reached the city today and I wish we hadn't. Three close calls so far and the streets are just full of these stupid beasts.
I sighed as I shut and blocked the doors of a house we ran into. It wasn't as run down at the others, it was stable enough to at least keep us safe.
I sat on the couch, smiling as Rocky jumped and curled up next to me. I pat him gently on his head, it's nice having him around, calming really.
I felt the couch dip beside me and when I looked, I saw Steven sitting there, straight faced and staring at the wall. I went to say something but stopped and looked down, not really having anything to say.
It was silent for a while, just us and our thoughts before Steven spoke. "Thanks....for helping us...."
I looked at Steven, a little confused. "What do you mean?"
"You've helped the rest of my group survive this whole time and it wasn't your job to...you could of just left us ages ago."
I smiled slightly, looking back down at the floor. "Dont worry about it, it was the least I could do since you let me stay with you for a while. It's just kinda sad...you know what happened to everyone that day."
"It is unfortunate, but things happen for a reason, at least thats what I believe." I looked up at Steven and back down once again. Things happen for a reason? So maybe I met these guys because something big was going to happen? I sighed. I never believed in that really, but it makes sence if you think about it. Oh well, I don't need another thing to be worrying about so might as well forget it for now.
It was getting late so we all found a room or a comfy area and slept.
In the morning we packed up what we could find in the house, and what we took out to eat and left.
Sneaking around the city, we started to make our way to the ocean, being as quiet as possible.
I felt a tug on my jumper as we stopped walking. I looked back at Aleks who looked worried. "Whats wrong?"
"Wh-What if there's no b-boats?"
"We can find one, and if it doesn't work, we'll make it work." I gave him a reassuring smile and we continued walking.
When we got to the beach, we split up. Me, Michael and Eddie going to the docks, Aleks and Steven at the beach to look for anything usefull.
I sighed as we looked at the boats. 2 sail boats, sails punctured and boats snapped. 3 moater boats, 2 without an engine but the last one had one, except it looked a little beaten up. It was our only chance though.
I got into the boat, examining the engine. It was a little rusted, but not enough to really damage anything. It looks like it'll work with a bit of fixing up but we'll need tools.
"Eddie can you go and tell Steven we need some tools, you three can go look for them, me and Michael will stay here." Eddie nodded and went back to the other two. I sighed, slumping down into the boats seat, Michael taking a seat next to me.
"Think it'll work?"
"Yeah, hopefully with a bit of fixing it'll run again."
"You know how to fix a moater?"
"Well I used to watch my dad fix the car in the garage. I don't know enough to be a mechanic but I know enough to fix a simple problem like rust." Michael nodded and looked at his knees. His hands were clenched tightly into fists, he was nervous? "Whats wrong?"
"I just...feel like something bads about to happen." I went to say something but Aleks' scream echoed from the beach. We both got up and raced down towards the area. A pack of zombies were surrounding them. Steven and Eddie trying to fight them off as Aleks was hiding behind Eddie.
We went to help but as I was running off I heard Michael grunt. When I looked back he had been tackled by two more of them. I turned to go help but he screamed at me before I could. "Kevin go help the others, I can handle myself fine!"
"You can't do you remember what I happened when I was pinned like that!"
"Im fucking fine Kevin!!" I flinched as he yelled that. It was obvious he wasn't going to be fine, he knew that himself, but he had fire in his eyes, he wasn't going to give up even if he was surrounded. I nodded hesitantly and continued running to the other three, shooting zombies as I did. Eventually I made it to them and we killed all of them.
I sighed and looked back to where Michael was tackled before, but he wasn't there. I frowned, I couldn't hear gun shots or anything really.
I was focusing to much on listening and watching for Michael that I didn't see or hear the zombie behind me. Before anything happened a gun was fired and the zombie fell beside me. I looked down at it in shock and back at who fired the gun. Michael, thank fucking christ he wasn't dead.
I smiled at him but it quickly faded as I saw how he held his neck. Something was definitely wrong.
When he fell to his knees I ran up to him, bending down beside him. "Michael, whats wrong?" He moved his hand and I forced myself not to gasp. He was bitten, and this wasn't going to be solved like mine was.
"I don't want to be one of those fucking creatures."
"Then..." he just nodded, we both knew what was going to have to happen. I looked back at the other three who were checking if they were bit. The zombies did get pretty close this time. I looked back at Michael who had fallen against me, he was getting weaker and his eyes were starting to close. "I'll do it....ok?"
"I-I can't as-ask that o-of yo-you..."
"You wouldn't be able to do it anyway, you won't have strength to pull the trigger. It's ok, really..." Michael looked up at me and smiled kindly.
"Tha-nks...f-for ever-everything...."
I smiled back, trying not to cry. It was like losing another family member. "No problem...at least you'll be free from this rotted place now." Michael nodded and realxed a little in my lap. His eyes shut but he was still consious. I took the gun from his hand, pressing it against his forehead. I gripped his hand before I shot, "good luck ahead Michael, we'll miss you." I saw a slight nod from him and I pulled the trigger.
I flinched from the blood but didn't care to much. I swalled the lump in my throat as I forced back tears that wanted to fall. I didn't know him much, but he was still close to me, a good friend.
"Kevin...?" I looked back at the three who hadn't moved from where they were standing, so they didn't know what happened. I looked back down at Michael and sighed, picking him up but covering his head with a cloth I had in my pocket. I walked over to them.
"He was bitten." Aleks was trying not to cry but tears still fell down his cheeks.
Steven nodded, "we should bury him somewhere. We found a shovel on the beach, lets find somewhere nice." I nodded and after we burried him, Aleks found a flower that wasn't dead. He nervously walked up to the pile of dirt and placed it down.
I frowned, poor guy, but he's stong not to burst into tears. I looked up to Steven, "did you find anything useful to fix the moater?"
Steven nodded, "Eddie has them in the bag." I nodded looking back at Eddie. Time to leave this island and hopefully we'll find somewhere nice to be without having to worry anymore
