TW: Blood

The warm Egyptian wind blew against Tikki's current host, Hatshepsut, as they stood on the peak of a now worn and destroyed pyramid. This akuma, a jaded market worker who had gotten jipped one too many times recently, stood before them. Ladybug's red, flowing kalasiri billowed behind her as the wind picked up once more. The market worker was on his last leg, but so were the two superheros, Ladybug already having used her lucky charm and Chat laying somewhere towards the bottom of the pyramid, injured.

"Tikki, I'm not sure how much longer we can hold out. We don't exactly have anything to charge you up, and it looks like the akuma is about to throw another attack at us." Hatshepsut stated, still looking straight at the market worker, not wanting to be caught off guard by a sudden attack.

"I'll be fine for a little longer Hatshepsut, just focus on getting the butterfly out of his necklace." Tikki replied, equally wary, but still holding out hope for a sudden turn of events.

"Alright", the black haired girl said, turning momentarily to look down at her partner behind her. He had been punctured through the stomach by one of the akuma's many blades. The situation wasn't looking in her favor, but it was worth a shot. "But like I said, I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to- ".

Her words were abruptly cut off as she was sucker punched in the solar plexus, all of the air in her lungs being knocked out of her as she made her quick decent towards the bottom of the pyramid. The akuma didn't seem to want to leave things at that though, as he followed the heroine down.

Hatshepsut reached the bottom of the structure and in close pursuit was the akuma, wielding what looked to be a large mace. Ladybug struggled to regain control of her breathing as the market man gained ground, looking even angrier than before as his prey had made him work for the kill. Finally, regaining her breath, Ladybug stood, facing her opponent dead on as he finally fully approached her, prepared to block his oncoming attack with her yo-yo. He swung with deadly force and accuracy as the mace made its way towards her abdomen, but it looked like her weapon of choice would block the attack. However, in that moment as the mace drew every closer-

Her transformation wore off.

The mace made contact with her stomach, skin tearing and blood spewing from both the wound and her mouth. She lay stomach down, staring at her kwami, whom had deserted her at such a crucial point. Tears streamed down her dust streaked face, leaving tracks. The akuma came in for the finishing blow.

"Tikki!", Hatshepsut screamed out in agony and terror, "Tikki, spots on!"

Nothing happened. Tikki looked on in fear, tears forming in her large, bug like eyes, soft whimpers escaping her mouth.

"Tikki, please!", sobbed the young superhero, only 14 years of age, "Please don't let me die!"

Chat was already dead at this point, there was no hope for the heroes, but neither Ladybug, nor Tikki knew this at the time. Ladybug was rapidly bleeding out, however her pleas for mercy and help never stopped.

Tikki closed her eyes, tears still falling from her eyes, as the akuma brought the mace down on the young girl's head. Blood splattered, coating the, now human form, kwami. She collapsed to her knees. Loud sobs escaped her lips, but she paid no attention to them. Her eyes were focused on her host. The one she had had for the longest time, a whole nine months.

A young looking, tan-skinned boy came up behind the burgundy skinned girl and watched as the former heroine's blood flowed freely on the dirt surrounding the pyramid.

"How could I have let this happen, Plagg?", Tikki whispered to her companion, standing beside her, "How could I have let her die?!"

"There wasn't anything you could have done, Tikki." He had lost his fair share of hosts before. Ancient Egypt wasn't as prone to things like pigeons for weapons, however this one had stung the most out of all of them.

Their other hosts had all had relatively quick deaths compared to these two. They had lasted days, maybe weeks if they were lucky. These two had lasted nine months. That was nine months of getting to know their charges, nine months of forming bonds, of starting to have their hosts grow on them, all for it to be torn from them, just like the others. In the kwami's lives, they only had each other to rely on. They were the only constants in each other's lives. They only thing keeping them from walking the earthly realm alone, without a familiar face in the world.

Being gods was a difficult task to say the least, this being one of the most harrowing task on their list of godly chores: choose a host, train them, watch them inevitably die.

With later charges, Plagg started to be more aggressive and distant, in hopes of keeping himself from growing fond of his hosts. Tikki took just the opposite position, forcing her way into every charges heart and treating them as if she were their own mother in hopes of keeping another tragedy like the one she had witnessed that windy day on top of the destroyed pyramid from ever happening again.

The kwamis have taken their separate paths in life, but one thing keeps them coming back together again and again throughout history: the miraculous presence of hope that is found between them; the gods of destruction and creation.

The kwamis turn from the still bleeding girl and face each other, searching for the small grain of hope that can keep them from giving up their futures. They pause for a moment, simply staring and searching until they presumably find what they're looking for. They turn away from each other, away from the girl they once loved, that they once knew as Hatshepsut, link arms and walk towards the shining sun, akuma still raging behind them in the windy Egyptian summer.
