Chapter 2

On the first day of school was the worst, I dropped the kids and took a day off to visit my sister. When I got to the hospital, they told me that she wasn't able to talk anymore. I saw her after 6 months and as soon as I entered the room, tears streamed down my face. She didn't look like herself anymore. I gave her a huge hug and it seems as if she couldn't recognize me or she forgot about me. Her illness was slowly killing her, the doctor told me. I promised myself I'd spend every moment I could with her. For the next few days, I stayed at the hospital.

A few days later...

"Excuse me Mrs. Bea Horan" I heard the nurse say early in the morning. "Yeah, what's the matter?" "Your husband called, said to call him back." I checked my phone right away to return his call, despite the fact that he's probably sleeping. "Hi! When are you coming back home? The kids are going mad." Niall said as soon as he picked up the phone. "Oh, I don't know...soon. Nialler, I think Katrine should come meet her mom." I said in a whisper and I noticed Brooke's eyes open at the mention of her daughter's name. She got up quickly and she started hitting her head against the wall, with tears in her eyes. "Emergency! Call you later babe!" I hung up and grabbed her arm. "It's okay Brooke, you're gonna be okay." She glared at me, but I didn't let her go. "Sit down, come on. It's okay. Take a breath and if you want we can have a little chat." Her eyes were red and she didn't do anything but looked at the picture next to her bed. It was Katrine as a baby. I turned her face right away. "Katrine is okay, I promise. If you want to see her, I'll tell Niall to bring her in. I know it's been a few years now, she's all grown up." Brooke smiled and looked at the door, where the nurse was sitting down. "May I have a minute?" she asked. I went outside and sat in the waiting room.
