One month later

I was on break at work, nervous for my hour lunch to be over.
Today I would know if I passed the exam to be promoted. I had studied hard so I was a little hopeful.

I'm scared
12:20pm

I got up and decided to get some fresh air. I sat outside and enjoyed the cool breeze. My phone vibrated and I looked at the text message.

Chad😏: don't be. You got this
12:25pm

I sighed and replied back to his text.

I know. Thanks chump lol

I waited for him to reply and instead he called me. I rolled my eyes playfully and answered the call.

"Yes Chad?" I smiled.

"Watchu doin?" He asked.

"On lunch and was texting you. What you doing?"

"Shit, bored as hell. I miss you Lei." He responded, causing me to smirk.

"Oh yeah?" I chuckled.

"Mhmm. I wanna see you when you get off"

"Okay, I get off at four today. I'll see you later chump"

I heard him chuckle before hanging up.
I smiled a little and headed back in to endure my fate.

"Ms. Hatch, come to my office please" my boss called out to me as soon as I clocked in.

I took a deep breath, slowly letting it out as I followed him.

"Yes Mr. Mays?" I asked, trying to hide my nervousness.

"Well, I guess I might as well just tell you now" he sighed.

This couldn't be good I thought.

"You failed the exam by one point. Charlotte was your competition but she failed it also. Not my place to say by how many points." He chuckled.

I shook my head. One fucking point.

I wanted to cry. Like a big ass baby to be exact.

"Marlei. I see you have potential and I see you really love the animals and you enjoy it. I've never saw anyone work as hard as you and actually enjoy it besides myself" he laughed.

I smiled small at him.
I stared at him as he watched me intensely as if he were trying to choose his words wisely.

"Are you willing to go to school and be hands on for about a year? While also working side by side with me to get more hands on training?"

I quickly nodded my head and smiled widely.

"Are you serious right now?!" I squealed.

"Of course Mr. Mays!" I exclaimed causing him to laugh at me.

"The position is yours but I want you to work hard. School isn't easy but I know you can do it Marlei" he smiled at me.

We both stood up and shook hands. Both smiling at each other.

"Thank you Mr Mays. I highly appreciate it"

"No problem Marlei. Make me proud" he smiled back.

I couldn't stop myself from grinning as I exited his office.
I glanced over at Charlotte as she was talking to another one of our coworkers.
