“Artillery, Fire!” One of my commanders shouted close to me. I watched as the trebuchets launched their projectiles into the air. The projectiles sailed right toward the enemy front line which was advancing at a rapid pace. One made its mark and took out a good few spearmen and most of them were short or sailed into the enemy ranks further on.

“Milord! Milord!” I saw a messenger approaching on his horse. The animal looked exhausted and so did he. He stopped close to me and took a deep breath. “Milord, the right flank is slowly starting to break. Lord Carus wishes to know what you want to do.” He said looking at me expectantly.

“Send in another column of spearmen and two columns of swordsmen. Get them to the front line to help relieve his men. We can’t let that side break! Also, get archers over there as well. Send the third column and hold the rest in reserve.” I barked my orders to the man, who turned around on his horse and thundered off.

I turned back to the battle and watched the action develop more. Along the entire front of my battle-line chaos was erupting as the swordsmen and spearmen from the enemy collided with my soldiers. I heard the twang of bowstrings as the bows released their seekers of death and watched as they rained down on enemy. My artillery was firing at a nice steady pace and I watched as one projectile crushed an enemy catapult. I was so focused on the battle before me that I was startled to feel a tap on my shoulder, which caused to jump a little with fright. Turning to my right I saw the cause of the tapping. It was one of my commanders.

“Forgive me my king, but I see a problem with the right side even more.” He said gesturing over to the right flank and indeed there was a problem. The right side was further back from the rest of the line, which meant the enemy could flank my middle column without total hindrance. I groaned in frustration and thought about it for a minute before coming up with a mad strategy.

“Lord Eutis, send the rest of the reserve in. The knights as well and tell all the archers to rain hell upon the enemy. We are going to throw everything we have at them. I mean everything.” I said calmly. I didn’t want an answer at all. I wanted to win this battle.

“Liam. Isn’t that a bit extreme? I know winning a battle against the Tragoians will be amazing. Just remember, They are Tragoians. Their warriors are some of the best in all the land and you wish to just throw the whole of your army against them?” Eutis was beyond flustered and I could tell he was also confused.

“That’s what I just said Eutis. Now please can we do this? I wish to lead the charge of the knights myself. Not for glory or anything of sorts, but to inspire the men to rally and fight!” I said emboldened by my own words. He was giving this serious thought and he has every right to think it through. He is one of my commanders and a brilliant strategist at that. It took a few moments before he looked at me.

“Liam, this bold plan of yours might work. I’ve thought it through. We can send you with the knights to flank their left side from the hill over there. We can also send the reserves to flank their right side from the forest. I will command the main battle-line and send it forward. I highly doubt they would be ready for that.” Eutis’ idea was extremely thought out and seemed fool-proof, but I had an idea that we might lose.

“It’s a brilliant strategy Eutis, but what if it fails. That wouldn’t be good at all.” I sounded harsher than I meant to, but he didn’t seem fazed by it. In fact, he looked rather encouraged which was shocking to say the least.

His gaze turned serious and his eyes seemed to be studying me for a second. “Then don’t let it fail.” His voice was clam, but I could tell he wanted to yell it at me. “King Liam. This day shall be remembered for its deeds of battle and tale of how King Liam won a historic battle against the famed Tragoian Empire! Sword and shield will break, while the sounds of cheers fill the air. THIS IS YOUR DAY LIAM!” Eutis finished his speech and rode off to prepare for the assault.
