Chapter 4: Darkness of the North

Unknown’s P.O.V.

A scream tore from the forest as I ran towards my house. We weren’t supposed to be out after the sun fell from the sky due to the forces that had appeared in our kingdom. The fire wood that I collected was scattering as I heard the footsteps of something in the distance.  I arrived at my house, short of breath and not prepared.

“Mother? Father?” I called out as I entered my home. I closed the door as the fear from the silence kicked in.

A hand suddenly grabbed me and pulled me into the room close to the door. I couldn’t scream as a hand was clamped over my mouth.

“Quiet my child,” Mother whispered into my ear. “They will hear you.”

I felt a cold chill crawl up my spine as I heard footsteps come closer to the place we were hiding. I felt my mom’s arms tense up around me and I covered my mouth to not make a noise. The door opened to reveal my father.

“Come quickly dear, we must escape before we a—“He was suddenly pulled into the darkness and a horrible screeching sound followed.

“Run child!” Mother pushed me out the door. She was quick to follow and I could still hear her footsteps as I ran towards wherever my mind was taking me. A sudden shrill scream came behind me and I knew my mother was gone. My chest burned as air passed through my nose and out. My legs began to burn and felt like I needed to pick up the pace.

The sound of many footsteps was heard behind me, getting closer and closer. I needed to find the strength to continue, but my body was getting tired.

“Turn around and scream,” a voice whispered into my ears. It looked in the direction it came from and no one was there. I felt a strong urge to do what it said. I stopped running, turned around and screamed at the things coming toward me. Silence suddenly befell the area I was in as nothing was behind me.

“Got you!” A voice said as a pair of hands grabbed me and night surrounded my eyes forever.

Liam’s P.O.V.

Birds chirped away happily outside my window as I sat thinking about my meeting with the council. The mysterious forces that have attacked many places in the northern section of my kingdom have yet to be described in battle. Every single place that has been attacked has left no survivors. It seems odd to think that my kingdom is facing a new enemy. One that is strong and powerful, yet silent and never present.

“My liege?” I shot my head up toward the person who had spoken.

“Yes?” I was still confused about everything, but I needed to put on a false happy face.

“Harry would like to speak with you milord.” I nodded my understanding and waved him in.

“Liam, Niall is gone.” Harry spoke in a hushed voice as if he would die from saying it.

“What do you mean gone?” I asked rather confused about his statement. Yes, it made perfect sense, but why would Niall just up and leave?

“Not in the sense that he walked out, but I believe he was kidnapped.” Harry had a couple tears appear in his eyes.

“We will find him Harry. I promise!” I said as confidently as possible. Zayn and Louis came barging into my room unannounced.

“Blood was found near the window Liam!” Zayn shouted.

“Call the guards out and send out patrols. We must find him.”

“Indeed! He is the key to something big!” Harry said quietly.

"Key to what Harry?" I asked him while the others stared at him in confusion as well.

"Zayn, Louis, do you not remember the sayings that drifted through the kingdom when we were younger. The prince is part of the legend that deals with the dark shadows." Harry said carefully as the other two nodded slowly. "He would be corrupted by them and lead to victory unless defeated in single hand combat or killed. It seems weird to me Zayn, that Niall doesn't practice with swords if I remember right." Zayn nodded his understanding.

"Please key me in this?" I semi-pleaded to them. They looked at each other and nodded. It was time to figure out what was happening.
