Chapter 13
(Amelia's P.O.V)
It had been almost a week since Devan had escaped from our grasps and we still had no idea where she was. I had grown tired of walking around the station, feeling the false sense of hope when I saw a woman that looked like Devan from behind. These past few days especially, had begun to put a toll on my mental health so I had decided to go back to the penitentiary to look for more clues.
Sliding my sunglasses off of my face, I looked at the building that I had called home for months, with disgust and regret. How could I be so stupid? Thinking that I would honestly be able to get a confession out of the criminal whom I had sought after for years. Just to have her slip from my grasp the second I had closed my eyes, covered my ears, and turned my back.
Unlocking the large front door, I stepped inside the cold building; not feeling any source of comfort as I walked past Devan's cell door and into my office, closing the door behind me. I sat behind my desk and turned on the computer, pulling up Devan's cell footage from that night. I sat back in my chair to get comfortable as the video began to play and my eyes landed on Devan's sleeping form. Groaning, I sped the video up, watching as she tossed and turned as the night grew older.
Just as I was about to give up and stop watching, I slammed my hand down onto the keyboard to slow down the video as I watched Devan slowly get out of bed and look around her cell. I felt my heart skip a beat in my chest as my adrenaline started pumping, watching as Devan looked directly into the camera and waved, mocking me. Slowly she pulled out one of the butter knives from the cafeteria and rolled her chair below the vent. Gracefully, she stepped onto the chair and got her balance, starting to unscrew the screws that held the vent in place. I sped the video up slightly and watched as she worked more quickly, pushing the vent up into the crawlspace before squeezing herself up into the shaft. I watched as she disappeared, leaving me to question how she would have put the vent back into place if she had already vanished.
My questions were quickly answered when I watched two of my men appear at the bottom of the video screen, looking at the camera before going to work on putting the vent back into place. I watched in shock as they laughed and exited her cell, realizing that they were the ones that had originally been standing guard of her cell that night.
I slammed my hand down onto the table as I cursed loudly, feeling hurt that two of my own men would do that to me. I was interrupted as I had began to mumble angrily; by my cellphone ringing. I picked it up and answered, putting it on speaker as I began to look through my desk drawers, trying to find their files.
I was stopped dead in my tracks when I heard the voice that greeted me, one that I knew a little too well. "Good morning, mon amour! How did you sleep last night?" Devan asked as I growled and clenched my teeth until my jaw began to ache. "Where the hell are you Devan?" I demanded, glaring down at my phone. "I'm not going to stay on the phone for very long ma chérie, I just wanted to inform you that there is a package arriving for you at the station you were posted at, so get your nice ass back over there and see the surprise that I left for you." With that she hung up and I was left staring at my phone in disbelief, trying to figure out how she knew where I was posted, and how I wasn't there right now.
Quickly I snapped myself out of my thoughts and grabbed my coat after I had found the files that I needed and walked out the door, speeding off in the direction of the station. As I was turning into the station parking lot, I received a call from Harvey. I quickly found a parking spot and answered the call, not bothering to get out of my car.
"Hey... Amelia... Some guy got off of the subway and put a wrapped package onto the ground and walked away. The tag on it is addressed to you, should we get the bomb squad out here?" He asked, causing me to chuckle and shake my head at how naive he was. "No Harvey, remember, she wouldn't dare hurt me." I replied as I got out of my car and walked into the subway station, seeing a crowd of people gathered at the center of the platform.
I pushed my way past them to find Harvey and my men staring at the small box wrapped in dark green wrapping paper and a red ribbon. I slowly pulled the ribbon loose and tore open the wrapping paper, cutting open the tape that was holding the box closed with my pocket knife. I looked down to find a picture frame face-down laying at the bottom of the box. I could hear my heartbeat through my ears and I could feel my blood run cold as I turned over the picture frame to find her staring at me.
Her. My beautiful little girl that I could barely recognize now. She was standing in a patch of green grass in the backyard of a house that I did not know, smiling up at the lens as someone took her picture. She had my smile.
Something inside of me knew that I quickly needed to get home, because there would be something there, waiting for me. I held the picture close to my chest and ignored my teams confused shouts as I headed to my car and sped home, making it there in record breaking time.
As I pushed open the door, I saw a crowd of people waiting for the elevator so I decided to take the stairs. After four flights, I walked down my hallway slightly out of breath, feeling my heart pound from nervousness and tiredness at the same time as I continued walking towards my front door.
As I walked closer to my apartment, I put my keys back into my pocket, noticing that my door was slightly open. Placing my hand on the cold painted wood, I pushed my front door fully open, coming face-to-face with the woman that haunted my dreams at night; causing me to question whether I was an adequate officer or not.
Devan didn't say a word as an evil smile spread across her face and she stepped to the side, allowing me to see the little girl that was standing shyly behind her, my little girl.
