Chapter 12

(Amelia's P.O.V)

"How the fuck do we lose one of the most dangerous criminals that we've had in 12 years and her partner in the same night?!" I yelled, my blood starting to boil as I quickly put my uniform on; pulling out my gun (she could still be somewhere in the building) as I ran to Devan's room.

When I had finally arrived at her steel door, I saw that it was already open and two officers were standing in the middle of the room, looking everywhere. "What are you looking for?" I questioned, trying to contain my anger. "We're trying to find how she could have possibly gotten out of here. The window bars are still in tact so she couldn't have gotten out that way. The only other way that she could have gone was through the front door but I really don't see how a woman her size would be able to do that without alerting us." He responded as I flipped her mattress onto the floor, checking for weapons.

After I saw that the only thing underneath her mattress was the bed springs, I sighed and looked up, rubbing my forehead. I opened my eyes to stare up at her dull white ceiling to try and think when something caught my eye. The air conditioning vent was slightly ajar, one of the screws not put back into place. I frowned and grabbed Devan's chair, wheeling it underneath the vent, asking one of the officers to hold it in place. I looked up at the vent as I pulled out my pocket knife, using the blade to take out the remaining three screws and let the vent lid crash onto the floor with a metallic thud. I growled and looked up, knowing exactly how she had gotten out of here.

"Get Harvey and everyone else into the meeting room now. We're finding her, god dammit."

I watched as every officer in the penitentiary walked slowly into the room, filling the brown empty plastic chairs. They didn't dare look up at me as I glared at all of them, and even though I did partially blame them for her escape, I knew that most of the blame was on me and my negligence. My eyes caught Harvey's as he looked at my gravely, making his way to the front of the large room with the gray walls as everyone shifted under my harsh gaze.

I slammed the files that I had in my hands onto the metal table that stood in front of me, leaning on it as my men stared back at me uneasily. "I fucked up." I finally confessed after a few minutes of silence, Harvey clearing his throat to get my attention. "Amelia this isn't your fault, how could you possibly blame yourself for something that happened when you were asleep?" He asked, stepping closer to me as I clenched my fists to hide the shaking.

"You don't get it do you? None of you do. The reason she had the temperatures so different in her room from night to day was because she was expanding the metal so that it would be wide enough for her to crawl through. I was dumb not to realize that before." I tried to explain, watching as Harvey's face fell as he realized that I was right. "Holy shit that girl is smart." He said, staring at me in disbelief as I opened the folder on the table to look at my notes.

"We all know that Devan and her partner are going to be very dangerous, we may need to even alert the police so that no one dies. But if we do alert them, this place will be shut down faster than we built it. For right now, and I know that this is highly illegal, but for right now, we need to try and keep quiet about it." I said, watching everyone nod their heads in understanding. I sighed and pushed some hair out of my face, closing the folder absent-mindedly.

"Here's what we're going to do, we're going to get out of here as fast as we can. We're going to look everywhere that we can think of, some of you will even stand guard at some of the banks. We will find her before she fucks shit up again." I ordered, watching everyone quickly leave to start packing, hearing the annoying sound of the chairs scraping against the floor as their footsteps left the room.
