Chapter 2
(Amelia's P.O.V)
I sat in my squad car at the gas station watching a man struggle with his gas cap. I finally got tired of watching the old man struggle and exited my car, stepping on the cracked concrete. "How are you doing today sir?" I asked as I reached him, startling him when I spoke. "I'm fine officer... How are you?" He asked nervously. I smiled and replied as I observed him. I couldn't understand why he was nervous, he hadn't done anything wrong. But, then again, people were always nervous when an officer approached them.
"Do you need assistance with that sir?" I asked politely. I had no smile on my face as I wasn't supposed to show emotion to the person I was apprehending or just helping. Some people used your emotions against you. "I would like that ma'am." He said with a small smile. I finally gave in and smile at the old man as I walked past him and twisted the gas cap open for him. "There you go sir, have a nice day." I said as I walked away and stepped into the air conditioned gas station.
"Morning Amelia. Just start your round?" Tom, the manager that usually had work when I came in for my morning coffee, asked. "Yeah, any trouble Tom?" I asked, slightly amused. "Just those teenagers over there in the corner that are looking at the magazines. I think they're trying to steal one." He said as he filled up a cup of coffee for me. I nodded and walked over to the teens as they laughed but immediately stopped when they caught sight of me.
The boys' mouth fell open but the girl with them frowned and crossed her arms over her chest. "The manager says that he thinks you all are trying to steal that magazine in your hand. Either pay for it or put it back. It's that simple." I said as the boys looked at the ground embarrassed. "Why would he think that we're stealing it when we're just looking at it? Is there a law against reading?" The girl asked defiantly. But I was used to her type, resistant. But I couldn't just throw her on the ground and cuff her for questioning me.
"There's no law against reading ma'am. But there is a law against not following an officers orders. Now put the magazine back, or pay for it." I said more commanding as I watched the boys put the magazine back and walk out the of store. Leaving the defiant girl standing in front of me.
"Police officers are jerks. We weren't going to steal it. You just walk in here and assume that-" "Let me interrupt you right there. I was watching you for ten minutes before I came over here. Don't stand there and tell me that you weren't going to take it because you were. I deal with people all day that have given me that lie and they're twice your age. I suggest you go in a better direction or you'll end up in the back of my squad car, got it?" I asked, staring down at the young girl. Even though I had lied about watching her, the girl stalked away and slammed the gas station door shut as she fumed away.
I chuckled and walked back over to the counter to talk to Tom. "Scared them away I see." He said with a chuckle. "It was the face." He said with a louder chuckle. I laughed at this and shook my head staring down at the countertop. I knew he was just joking. I had plenty of men tell me that I looked very attractive for a female officer. But, I didn't care what they thought, because I didn't play for that team.
"Have a nice day Amelia." "You too Tom." I replied as I walked out and sat down in my squad car with a sigh.
I could tell that today would be a slow day. So I'll tell you about myself. My name is Amelia Barbati. Pronounced Bar-ba-tea. You have no clue how many times people mispronounce it. My name is Italian so obviously my parents and I are from Italy. We migrated to Indiana from Florence when I was ten so it was easy for me to learn English while still keeping my native tongue. At home I usually spoke Italian because my parents didn't want me to lose my native language.
