Chapter 3
(Devan's P.O.V)
"Are you sure that you want to do this bank? It's heavily guarded. Maybe we should get some backup for this one." Bernardo said as I sat across from him at the kitchen table.
"No, they'll want some of the money." I simply answered as I put my cigarette out. Today was the day. I think that this will be the biggest score that we've had in a long time. We'll probably make the paper once we've done it. But, Bernardo being the wimp that he is, was worried about the security issue.
I will admit that I had to think about it and really look at their shift times and the layout of the bank but I have it figured out. The front. That's where we'll enter. You probably think that we're crazy for just going in the front door but they don't have as much security in front as they do in the back. Because, most criminals always try to enter through the back but we're not that dumb. Well... I'm not that dumb. Bernardo wanted to enter through a damn window.
"How about we go through the ventilation system?" He asked as I groaned at his stupidity. "Are you really that dumb or are you acting to boost my self esteem? I swear to god if you ran these things we would be in prison by now." I said as he glared at me and turned to look at the window.
"Devan take this seriously. This is big. One screw up and we're done." He said as I nodded and looked out of the window at the apartment next to us. I knew about how serious this was. If one of us looked at someone funny, said something wrong, or walked wrong, it would all be over. We won't even make it to prison, we'll just be laying on the floor with bullets in our heads.
But, as usual I'm confident that it will work, I mean, it has for the past five years. And, as usual, Sergeant Barbati will be the only one that will know that it actually was us. Or me, I don't think she even knows about Bernardo.
"Look, just do as I said and we won't have to worry. Alright?" I asked as he nodded and got up to get a beer from the refrigerator. He asked if I wanted one and I declined as I got up and stepped out onto the apartment balcony. I sighed as I looked up at the cloud filled sky and took a deep breath, smelling the food and pollution from down below.
I leaned against the railing and ran my index and middle finger down my lips out of habit. I've done it even since I could remember. My father hated it.
I suddenly clutched the railing as the memory of my father came flooding back to me. I haven't thought about that bastard in two years. What he took from me was irreplaceable and I'll never forgive him. But, I don't need to, he was murdered three years ago and the killer was never found, they never even knew who did it.
I felt my anger build and struggled to control it as I stared at the people down below me. I would have punched the wall by now but I needed to have full health for what was to come later today. I took deep breaths until I felt as if I would pass out to calm myself.
I stepped back inside as I watched a woman step inside and smirk at me. "You must be Devan." She said and extended her hand out to me. I looked at it but didn't shake it as her smile faltered and she looked at Bernardo. "Why did you call me here? Obviously it wasn't for Devan." She said as I sat down on the couch and looked up at her with a small smirk.
The only reason Bernardo called women over here was for me. I didn't need him to but he insisted that I get "release" from planning all of the crimes that we do. But, I haven't had a one night stand in 8 months. I just don't find pleasure in them anymore.
"We need you for a get away driver. That's all." He answered as she sighed and nodded. "What do I get?" She asked as I chuckled and leaned forward. "Sweetheart the only thing you're going to get is me. If you wanted money you can walk right back out that door." I answered as I watched a grin spread across her lips. Her eyes swept all over my body several times before her eyes met mine again. "How good are you?" She asked as I leaned back against the couch with a confident smirk. "The neighbors two doors down complain about the noise." I said with a chuckle as I watched her eyes turn black from lust. "Fine, I'm in." She answered, staring directly into my eyes.
