"They won't tell me anything." Abel said, hanging up his phone after calling them back. We were roughly fifty minutes from the hospital his Mother was rushed to and my heart was trying to break my ribs it was beating so fast. I was scared to talk because of the panic written all over Abel's face, I didn't want to make anything worse, neither of us knew anything that was going on, we didn't know why she was rushed to the hospital.

Before I could put my foot in my mouth and say something stupid and sappy to make him feel better, I leaned over the console and put my head on his arm, lightly grabbing his forearm but obviously letting him continue driving because he was going insanely fast. "Everything will be okay, I promise." And there it was, the stupid cliche' garbage everyone ever says to someone going through something like this but I didn't know what else I could do.

Abel was silent for a moment. "Sylvia, I'm really scared. I don't know what I'm going to do if..." He couldn't finish his sentence but he didn't have to for me to understand where he was going with that. My grip tightened on his forearm.

"Don't think like that. Everything will be okay Abel, everything. I promise you." It was strange, how my words seemed to have a calming effect on him. It made my heart swell with happiness, even in a moment of such disrepair.

"I'm so glad to have you." Abel said sincerely, putting more pressure on the gas petal.

When we finally made it to the hospital, we found the closest parking spot and jammed into it and rushed into the main lobby. "Sarah Rollins? I got a call she was emitted and I need to know where she is." Abel said in a flurry, taking the woman by surprise. Without saying a word, she typed away with her crazy long nails, and I absentmindedly felt bad that she had to be here on Christmas Eve, away from her family.

"Third floor, room 219." She said with a small smile, and we charged off to the elevator. There were a few people strolling around the halls and I wondered their reasons for spending the holidays here, and I hoped all of them were having enough smiles.

I could see the panic on Abel's face though, and it broke my heart seeing him so scared. He was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet as he impatiently waited for the elevator, then in the elevator waiting to arrive at the fifth floor. The fact his Mother has been sick has been something he's known for years, but I don't think he's ever dealt with the idea of her not winning her ongoing battle with breast cancer. I wouldn't be able to either.

We asked the floor nurse where room 219 was then took off towards the direction she pointed us off to, assuming to see Sarah at her worst, but before we even got to the door we heard her voice.

"There is just no darn way I am waking up here on Christmas Day! Just no way!" We slowed our step and entered the room to see a nurse practically wrestling to keep the little lady in the bed, the second thing we noticed was the huge, bright pink cast that started at her ankle and went up to her knee.

"I'm sorry Ma'am but with all the sedatives and pain medication you're on for your broken tibia, you're not leaving tonight." But the nurse was having obvious issues with her.

"Mom, get back in the bed." Abel instructed going closer. "I'm serious. Now." Instantly his Mother listened to him and I smiled. She was such a sassy lady, it really came out once she left her abusive husband and I loved it, I also loved that just like me her weak spot was her son.

"Abel, you didn't have to come..." She frowned laying back in the bed.

"A nurse called and told me you were brought here, of course I had to come."

"It's Christmas Eve though... I could have waited, you had much better things going on-"

"Nothing is better than knowing my Mother is alright." Abel said sternly and I stepped further into the room, letting the nurse have more space to leave, she looked relieved to have someone else step into that fight. Immediately Sarah's eyes landed on me and she smiled brightly.
