The Spot

Students and professors never really paid attention to the tree behind the North Tower. Not that there was anything strange about it—it was simply a quiet, cozy place to read.

Y/N had found the spot two years ago, in her second year, and had been smart enough not to tell anyone about it. Not even her best friend, Fiel.

This year, she visited the spot more often than usual. Maybe because Fiel was too busy dating that cool bloke, Sam Thomas. Or maybe because Y/N just needed a break from the world—a place where no one noticed her. A place where she could hear nothing but the wind.

But today, the wind wasn't the only thing keeping her company.

Y/N was lying under the tree, reading, when someone bolted toward it and climbed up. She was so startled that she dropped her book on her face, losing her page completely.

"Are you serious?" Y/N shouted, looking up into the branches. She couldn't see the boy's face, but he seemed to be carefully balancing something on a limb. Realizing she was being ignored, she yelled even louder. "You interrupted my peace!" she roared, growing more aggravated by the second.

The boy climbed down, and Y/N instantly knew who she was dealing with. Albus. Bloody. Potter.

"Well, hello to you too," Albus said sarcastically, catching his breath. "How lovely to be greeted so politely."

A second ago, Y/N had wanted to pound his bones to dust and throw them into the Black Lake—but upon realizing he was that Potter, she just rolled her eyes and sat down again, trying to find her page.

"Hello?" Albus sat cross-legged in front of her. "Why'd you stop screaming?"

Y/N looked up from her book, then back down again. "Because you're a Potter," she muttered under her breath. "And a Slytherin."

Albus was about to leave her alone—until he heard her.

"Oh? Is it because I'm the odd Potter, yeah?" he asked, sounding offended. "A Potter in Slytherin? The only one not in Gryffindor in decades? The only Potter friends with a Malfoy? I thought people were over it."

"No, it's not that," Y/N said quickly, guilt tugging at her. "It's just—you're a Potter. A popular kid. And most Slytherins don't like me. So what does that sound like? A popular kid who's probably going to hate me."

"I don't even know your name. Why would I hate you?" Albus replied, frowning. "I'm Al—"

"Albus Potter, I know," Y/N cut him off, turning a page and continuing to read. After a few moments of silence (and she wondered why he was still there), Albus spoke again.

"I didn't catch your name."

"Didn't throw it," Y/N replied flatly.

"All right, Grouch."

Y/N slammed her book shut. "I. Am. Not. A. Grouch."

Albus smirked at her tone.

"It's just that people like you seem to think I'm some kind of abomination to society," she muttered.

"Well," said Albus lightly, "now that you know I'm nice, could you maybe tell me your name?"

"No. Just because we talked for two minutes doesn't mean I owe you my name. Besides, you'll probably forget it by tomorrow."

"No, I won't."

"Yeah, right." Y/N chuckled. "Why are you still here?"

"I don't know, honestly. This place just looks cozy. Maybe it's the grass—it's really soft." He gave her a playful look. "Also because I want to skip Quidditch practice."

"Frankly, I don't care. Just don't come back and ruin my peace again. This is my spot." Y/N frowned. She didn't want anyone else to know about this place—it would ruin the idea of it being safe.

"Says who?" Albus teased. "You can't just claim a spot as yours."

Y/N didn't answer. Instead, she stood up and walked toward the castle, clutching her book. Worried he might've actually offended her, Albus quickly got up and jogged after her.

"At least tell me your name!" he called out.

Y/N hesitated. She almost didn't want to shout it back—but then again, he'd probably forget it tomorrow anyway.

"It's Y/N! Happy?"

Albus grinned, satisfied. Maybe it was because she reminded him a little of Lily, his sister. Or maybe because she was just easy to annoy.

"Happy, indeed," he murmured, watching her disappear into the castle.
