"Derric, are you listening to me!?"

I looked up at the queen from where she sat across the dining table, letting out a small sigh. "Yes, mother. That witch must have a death wish for defying you."

She glared at me, dropping her fork. "That's all you have to say? She almost killed me!"

"Quite frankly, I wish she did." I muttered under my breath.

My mother flared her nose, rising from her seat. "What did you just say?"

"She shall see a gruesome death." I lied, tilting my head slightly. My mother; the queen, glared at me.

"You half-wit! Learn to shut your mouth! If you weren't my son, I'd have your head on a silver platter." She screeched.

I grinned at her lazily. "You said that last week."

My mother glared at me, her face red with rage. She walked towards me, fury blazing in her eyes. The queen rose her hand.

The sound of her hand connecting with my flesh rung though the air.

"Get out of my sight!" She demanded.

I got up, facing my mother. "When I'm king, I'll treat my people with the love and respect they deserve. I promise you, mother, I'll never be like you." While she stood there in shock, I took advantage. I stormed towards the door, slamming it open. There stood Jak, looking at me in surprise.

"Next time, why don't you hit me with the door?" Jak joked, shaking his head slightly.

I rolled my eyes, continuing down the hall. "Follow me."

...........................................................................................

Jak followed right behind me, staying quiet until we were far away from the dining room. "What happened in there?"

"She struck me again." I grumbled as I continued to hurry down the hall.

"Were you being an idiot again?" Jak asked, no sympathy in his voice.

"Aren't you a great friend? Couldn't think of a better companion." I uttered, glaring at him over my shoulder. Letting out an irritated huff, I hurried my pace.

Jak let out a sigh, speeding after me. "Her Majesty must always come first."

I skidded to a stop, turning to face him. "She treats you terribly!"

"She's only trying to make me stronger so I can fulfill my duties better." He growled.

I inhaled a small breath, shaking my head. "I'm on no mood to argue with you."

Jak rolled his eyes. "For once, you've said something somewhat intelligent."

I punched him in the shoulder, causing him to let out a light laugh. He is a great friend when he isn't obsessing over my mother. I understand that he's devoted to serving her for the better of the kingdom, but it irritates me immensely. She's a horrid person, and it hurts that everyone who's close to me adores her so much.

"So, what have you been up to lately?" I asked him, leaning against one of the walls.

He smirked at me, standing before me. "I met a girl today. Probably one of the loveliest I've ever seen."

"Oh? Will you see her again?" I question, amusement heavy in my voice.

He wrinkled his nose. "Her accent was unrecognizable. We only knew each other for a few minutes before she tried to slash my throat. Sadly, I fear her intentions here aren't good."
