The phone rings as I'm pacing the floor. I pick up and Kai's mom begins talking. The first words she says are "I'm so sorry, he didn't make it" and the rest fades out. The phone falls but the thud it makes repeats over and over. How could it possibly...?
Then I spring awake. The thud wasn't my nightmare at all. It was my window. I rub the sleep out of my eyes and lean up to see what's going on.
Kai?
It's too dark out to see his facial features but I'd know him anywhere. I glance at the clock. It's past midnight...
I run to the window and open it. He practically falls in my room, into my arms.
"I'm so sorry", he whispers into my chest. He stands up and I wipe the tears off his cheeks.
"Hey, guess what?"
He looks down, so I pick his chin back up with my finger, and kiss him lightly.
"I love you", I whisper. "Forever and always"
He smiles that cute smile, tears still collecting in his eyes. He needs to be held and doesn't want to say it. So I hold him without question. I let him cry. I let him let go of what's holding him back. And I wish I would've pressed send as I listen to him say sorry for being late. I don't have the courage to say I'm sorry. I don't have the strength to say it and not cry.
