I wake up to my loud alarm clock and the bright sun shining in my eyes. I yawn and turn over, burying my face in my pillow as I slam my hand on the alarm and groan. My first day at a new school after being kicked out of five previous ones. This is gonna be great.
"Percy!" My mom calls from downstairs. My mom is probably the best mom anyone could ever have. She loves me and is proud of me even after my five previous expulsions from school. She deserves way more than me and my stepdad. She deserves to live in a mansion with a loving, kind husband instead of being stuck in a small apartment in NYC with a man who doesn't even love her. Her dream is to get a college degree and become a NY Times Bestselling author. Instead, she works at a local candy shop with a bunch of mean old ladies. "Percy!" She calls again. "Get ready for school! You don't want to be late again!"
The smell of chocolate chip pancakes drafts up into my room from downstairs. Mmmm.... My favorite. I hope I don't disappoint my mom this year. I am determined not to get kicked out of school. I yawn and stretch as I sit up in my bed. I look at my reflection in the mirror. My black hair is tousled and messy and under my green eyes are dark circles from the lack of sleep. I have trouble falling asleep because of my ADHD. I stand up and strip out of my pajamas, then walk over to my dresser. I take out my favorite Avengers T-shirt and pull a royal blue hoodie on over it, then slip on a pair of ripped jeans and step into a pair on Nike's. I brush my hair the best I can, trying to get all the tangles out, and brush my teeth. I dash out of my room and slide down the railing of the stairs, landing in the kitchen where my mom is placing pancakes on my plate. When I arrive she looks up.
"Percy, sweetie, how many times have I told you not to slide down the railing? There are steps for a reason." She gives me a disapproving look, then sighs. "Fine... Just be quiet. Your father is still sleeping."
I walk over to the dining table and sit down. "Smelly Gabe isn't my father, and he never will be." I say snarkily.
"Honey, you know all the help he is for our family." She sighs and sits down next to me.
"Yeah, because playing poker and drinking is totally helping." I mutter under my breath.
"Percy, please just eat your pancakes. They're blue, and I made them especially for you." She slides my plate closer to me. Ever since Smelly Gabe told her that there was no such thing as blue food, she went out of her way to make everything she cooked blue. Blue coke, blue pancakes, blue cake, blue cookies, blue ice cream, blue this, blue that, blue everything.
I sigh and dig into my pancakes. As usual, they are undeniably delicious. After finishing, I wipe my mouth and thank my mom quickly. She gives me a kiss on the cheek and I grab my backpack, waving goodbye to her as I walk out the door to the bus stop. The autumn breeze scatters the red and orange leaves in swirls all over the ground and the sun is shining brightly. I turn a corner and continue down the street, finally arriving at the bus stop. I'm the only kid going to my high school that lives in my neighborhood, because it's dangerous and not really kid-friendly. The bus drives up, the doors open, and I step inside. I look around at all the taken seats. Everyone is looking up at me. Of course, since I'm the "new kid" and don't really fit in. I walk down the aisle, looking for a place to sit. Finally, a boy around my age waves me over. I smile gratefully and sit down next to him. He has curly dark brown hair, wide set brown eyes, and is growing a goatee. He's wearing a colorful rasta cap and has reed pipes dangling from a string around his neck.
"Hey new kid, I'm Grover." He says with a toothy grin. "What's your name?"
"I'm Percy!" I tell him as I set my backpack on my legs in front of me. "Thanks so much for letting me sit next to you, Grover."
He smiles widely and nods. "No problem, Perce. Can I call you Perce? I'm gonna call you Perce."
"Sure, go ahead... Goat boy!" I laugh and tease him of his goatee. He shoves me playfully, and I have a feeling that we're going to be good friends.
