Chapter Seventeen

Not only was my annoyingly lovable brother at the door but so was his new girlfriend, or who I thought was his girlfriend. She held my brothers arm like she’d float away if she let go and she was strikingly small. I had to look down to see her and my brother towered her making her seem like an oompa loompa.

She caught me staring and said, “Erm hi. I’m Jen.”

“Hi,” I said smiling, and then looked at Chase. “I didn’t know you’d be coming home tonight, let alone with a guest.”

Pushing past me and dragging Jen through the door he said, “Mom called and said we were having a special dinner. So I thought why not introduce my girl while we’re at it.”

I just stood there, kinda annoyed to be honest. Not only did my brother already interrogate Josh but this just means he can do it again in front of my parents and make him seem like a bad person. And my mom called him! Why would she do that? Ugh, this is gonna be an interesting night. I just got to make sure it doesn’t turn into a disaster.

I go into the living room where my mom is, dressed and ready, talking to Jen. And fussing over her like she’s a new born baby, I guess it’s understandable cause my brother hasn’t brought a girl home since ever.

“Sweetie,” my mom said turning to me, “Come here, let’s all chat for a bit. Your brother went to help your dad with dinner.”

I almost burst out laughing, my brother doesn’t cook or even help with dinner when he’s at home. I guess he’s trying to impress his new girlfriend. I sat on the other side of my mom, not wanting to make Jen feel ambushed.

“So...” I said, not knowing what to say.

“How did you and Chase meet?” My mom said filling in the silence.

“There I was just minding my own business studying in the library when she comes up to me and started flirting!” Chase exclaimed from behind us.

“I thought you were helping with dinner?” I asked.

“Dad kicked me out. He didn’t need my help anyways.” Figures.

“That’s not how the story went, Chase.” Jen spoke up from the other end of the couch. “You see I was sick for a few days and couldn’t go to class so I missed out on a few notes.”

“And naturally she came to the most attractive guy in her class.” My brother said butting in again.

“Um,no.” Jen said blushing a little. “Chase was one of the most arrogant perrson in that class, always debating with the professor and interrupting lectures, so of course I would remember him. And when I went to the library to try to catch up on what I missed, he sat down across from me and tried to flirt.”

Tried? No, I charmed my way into your heart.” Chase said.

“He did his best to.” Jen said giving him something. Of course my brother would flirt with her. Looking closer she was gorgeous, her black hair reaching her stomach and her eyes brown but so deep and was framed by the longest lashes I’ve ever seen.

“So you naturally turned him down, his trying to hard attitude is always a turn off.” I said laughing.

“Actually I did, but he wouldn’t give up.” She said laughing along. “He said I had to go out with him.”

“What a charmer.” My mother mumbled.

“Yes she had to go out with me. She didn’t have a choice.” Chase said ominously. “I noticed her before in class studying away and not noticing anyone. Minding her own business, but then this one week she didn’t show up. So I thought what a perfect opportunity for me to talk to her, so I got all the notes and handouts that she missed so once I saw her again I could use them to persuade her into going out with me.”

“And that’s exactly what he told me,” Jen said continuing on, “Chase said ‘you have to go out with me because I went through all this trouble getting all your missed work.’ And he waved the notes in the air, trying to bribe me into going on a date.”

“The plan was pure genius because she said yes.” Chase added.

I felt a little skeptical on that, “Did you actually say yes?” Directing the question to Jen, I wouldn’t have thought it would have been that easy.

“Actually I said no at first but then changed my mind.” She shrugged, “I did need the notes and Chase wasn’t that ugly looking”

I burst out laughing when she said this and looked over to Chase who had mock shock on his face. “Great to know my girl friend thinks I’m not that ugly.”

Jen winked at him, “I was only teasing! You know you’re adorable.”

My mom was beaming at both of them, looking like she just won the lottery or something. “You two are two cute! What a sweet story, it reminds me of the time your father and I met-”

BING BONG the doorbell rang cutting my mother off.

“Oh! That must be Rain’s boyfriend!” My mom exclaimed “I’ll get the table ready.”  And she bounced off towards the dining room.

I looked at the time it was already 5:50. I smiled to myself of course he came early, he wanted to make a good impression. He was trying to make sure my parents would love him, and why wouldn’t they? He was perfect. I stood up and went to the foyer, checking myself in the hallway mirror first. I looked different, pretty almost, maybe it was because my hair was straight or that I had makeup on. I hope I don’t seem like I’m trying too hard. But I pushed that thought out of my head and went to open the front door.

Standing dashingly handsome on my front porch was Josh, in a black tee under a leather jacket and faded grey jeans. He was smirking at me and was holding a bouquet of flowers.

“Are those for me?” I asked reaching for them.

“Actually no.” He said stepping around me and into the house. I pouted up at him but he just laughed and gave me a peck on the cheeks.

My mom came then all excited. “You must be Josh! Oh what an honour to finally meet you.” She said giving him a hug that took Josh by surprise.

When my mom let go of him he blushed a little. “Hi there Mrs.Emberly. I brought you flowers.” He said handing her the tulips.

“Oh. You shouldn’t have! I’ll put these in water. You two go join everyone else at the dining table.”

“Shall we.” Josh said extending his elbow to me. Smiling at him I took it and we made our way to the dining room.

There my dad, brother and Jen looked at us as we entered. My heart was pounding, this felt so nerve raking. Like I was heading into an interrogation for a murder I knew nothing about. That might have sounded a bit extreme but it’s how I felt. So to crush down this anxiety I smiled and introduced Josh to everyone.

“Dad, Chase, Jen, this is Josh. My boyfriend.” It sounds nice saying he was my boyfriend. “Josh, this is my dad, you’ve met my brother before and that’s his girlfriend Jen.”

The dining table was this long rectangular wooden table that could fit ten people. My dad sat at the head of the table and my brother and Jen to his left. I took a seat to my father’s right saving a seat for my mom and Josh sat beside me.

The table was filled with food from my mashed potatoes to my mother’s famous roast beef. And thinking of, my mother came into the room with a bottle of champagne.

“Since it’s a special night, why not drink a little?” My mother said giggling and filling everyone’s glass. I gave her a skeptical look. “Oh Rain, don’t worry. We won’t tell if you don’t.” She said winking at Josh and smiling at Jen. My mom can get a little carried away sometimes, and I don’t think she knows that only two out of six people here can legally drink. Two of those people being my parents. But I hasn’t gonna complain it was a special night.
