When we arrive, I look for Lincoln. I told him not to pick me up because I already promised Layla I'd be her third wheel for the ride before I told Lincoln I'd go with him.
As my eyes searched the room, Layla walks up to me with a women with beautiful wavy brown hair, like mine but more controlled. But that's not what catches me.
Her eyes are a gorgeous bright blue. It's not a color I see very often. They capture you and you can't look away.
Layla's voice breaks my eyes from the women's. "Zoe, this is Britt. She is a friend of mine. And Britt, this is Zoe. She's been my friend for a long time."
Britt and I shake hands and say hi to each other. Once Layla and Britt move on to talk to other people, I continue my search for Lincoln.
I look all around for him, but as the room starts to fill, it becomes harder and harder to see one individual person except the ones immediately around you.
I finally give up and go and sit at one of the empty tables. I watch everyone dance and party while I wait for Lincoln to hopefully find me.
I sigh and decide to get back up and look for Lincoln, but before I can get out of my seat, someone comes up behind me, places their hands on my shoulders and yells, "Boo!" Into my ear. I jump and turn around to see Lincoln standing behind me.
"I got you!" He says. I smile and stand up. "You wanna dance?" He asks me. I nod and he takes my hand.
We dance and eat and party for a few hours. By 10, we are exhausted and we have to sit down. So far, there hasn't been very few slow dances which is weird to me. Layla said there would be a lot. Maybe she was just playing with me.
We sit and talk for awhile before we finally have all our breath back and can dance again.Around the same time, a slow song starts. And Lincoln asks me to dance.
When we make it to the dance floor, me puts a hand on my waist and with the other he grabs my hand, while my other hand is on his shoulder.
We start to dance to the song. As we dance, Lincoln makes polite small talk. He tells me a little about himself and what he likes and such. I don't say much but little comments here and there.
When the song is over, we both release each other and Lincoln excuses himself. I go and sit back down and check the time. It's almost 11. I try to get though the crowd to find Layla or Lincoln so I can leave.
They were right. It does get crazy after 11. I push though all the people but it's impossible. I try to go back the way I came but I'm stuck. I grunt in frustration and start basically pushing people over trying to get out.
I get some rude remarks but no falls over and I make it out. Barely. And I know I look at mess. I had to get on my hands and knees at some point.
When I make it to the tables, I sit down and sigh deeply. I take a drink of water and when I look up, Lincoln is approaching me. "Hey." He says when he's close enough. "Hi." I reply shyly and look down at my lap. "You're right. This place does get bad after 11. Want me to stay with you?" I ask.
Lincoln laughs and nods. "Yeah. You don't have to stay. You weren't in charge of this party."
"Yeah, but I sure helped." I say sheepishly referring to the many times I interrupted his and Layla's planing sessions.
Lincoln laughs loudly and I smile. "Alright then. Want some coffee?" He asks.
I stop moving, and maybe even breathing. "No." I say darkly. Lincoln doesn't even look taken aback by my tone. "Layla told me you'd be like that. She said you really didn't like coffee." Lincoln says nodding.
Now I'm angry. "Um, when did she tell you that?" I ask bitterly. "About 10 minutes ago." He answers. I stand up and start to walk away.
"Wait!" Lincoln yells and grabs my elbow. I swing around and look down at him.
"I just want to know why. Layla said that you were afraid that I wouldn't believe you. I'm sure that I will." He says.
"Why didn't she just tell you herself?" I ask though my gritted teeth. "She said it wasn't her place." He replies. I soften a bit on the inside.
"I've waited awhile to know. Ever since Layla said you changed. When you told me what you used to be like. I want to know. I like you, Zoe. I'm pretty sure that you like me too. So what's holding you back?"
Lincoln pauses. "I have a feeling that all of this is connected. I want to understand."
There is silence between us for a minute. We just stare at each other. "You won't believe me and then, you will leave me." I say and pull away from his grip on my elbow and start to walk away.
"I want to try!" Lincoln yells. I stop and turn around.
"No one believes me but Layla. I don't think you will either." I turn back around and start to push my way though the crowd again.
"Zoe! Zoe please!" He says chasing after me. I make it to the other side of the crowd and Lincoln is right behind me.
"Why? Why do you want to understand and know so bad? You'll just turn around a leave me." I argue. I'm starting to cry and I don't want to. I need him to stop.
But of course, he doesn't.
"I want to be with you. Layla said that you wouldn't unless I understood. That's why. And just because you did something, I'm not going to leave you." He says desperately.
"I don't care what you did in your past as long as I can be in your future."
