Dualscar and Dolorosa knew each other for a long time. When Signless was young, Dualscar rescued he and the Dolorosa from a mob on the wharf. They sailed with him for a sweep, where the Dolorosa began to serve Dualscar. Later however, pale rom became red, and the jade blood and sea dweller became matesprits. He still served his duties as an Orphaner and pirate, and when he traveled, he kept his rival and kismesis, Mindfang, as company. Soon, the Dolorosa chose to raise hers and Dualscar's son. He would travel with his father sometimes, and would later raise the first heir of the Signless. When the Signless was executed, Dualscar bought his matesprit as a slave. His son, grown and strong, lived on his own. Mindfang called a raid on Dualscar's ship, and the Dolorosa was presumed dead. Yet she'd managed to float a piece of debris until Mindfang found her. The rest of the story goes the same, except I believe Mindfang took control of Dualscar when he killed the Dolorosa.
