Chapter 9: Bending the Rules

Mabel gets up off her chair and walks to her room, snickering. That leaves Mason and Dipper together at the table.

"So, I can't ever go outside...?" Dipper looked down at his hands.

"According to Mabel. Sorry man, she's the older one, so Stan put her in charge of the house whenever he's out," Mason rolled his eyes.

"Where is your... Grunkle— I mean Great Uncle— anyways?"

"He goes out and 'does business' for our shows and stuff." Mason uses his fingers as quotes, "No one ever really knows what he's actually doing, even Mabel," He shrugged.

"How shady," Dipper commented.

"Right?" Mason chuckled. He looked side to side around the room as if he was checking something, "Hey, I know that you want to go outside and check out those weird creatures in the woods. I can let you out if you want, when Mabel's gone."

"Really? You would do that for me?" Dipper's eyes sparkled.

"Yes, of course. I saw how sad you looked when she told you. One thing about Mabel— if she has the power to control you, she would. But whenever we don't have shows, she's usually out with Candy or something. I have to come with you though."

"Why?"

"I don't want you getting killed." Mason says simply.

"Oh, okay..."

"Next time she goes out, we can go. I'll tell you when she leaves."

"Thank you Mason. I really don't know what I would've done if I was just locked in this manor 24/7."

"No problem, Dipper," He smiled at him. Mason felt something warm in his stomach for just a moment, but it left as fast it came.
