I ran to the fountain area where I saw the Bellas huddled in one group. Stacie was texting on her phone while Cynthia Rose was checking her out. Fat Amy (who is formerly known as Fat Patricia) was boisterously laughing with Lily O while Chloe and Aubrey were practicing their vocal chords. Chloe.
Ok. There’s this one secret that I’ve been keeping and only I could ever know about. My parents don’t know, my friends don’t know, the world doesn’t know. I’m a lesbian. A lesbian in love with a girl who doesn’t feel the same way as me. I first knew ever since I noticed a pretty girl handing out flyers to those who wanted to join the all-girl a capella group. All I could think of was how great it would be to run my fingers through her shiny ginger hair and be able to stare into those sky blue colored eyes all day. And that girl is Chloe Beale.
“Beca!”
Chloe was the first one to see me. She immediately got up and ran to hug me.
“Oh Beca, I missed you so much!”
“I missed you too.” I said, patting her back.
She smelled like a mixture of cherry blossoms and jasmine oil. Her long beautiful hair was the scent of vanilla. She held me at arms length and I felt like everything around me disappeared as I stared into her eyes.
“How are you?” she asked me.
“I’m fine.” I breathed.
“What’s up with your dad’s no cell phone rule anyway? It felt like forever waiting to talk to you again.”
“I know. Well, I’m here now!”
She smiled. “Oh Beca!” she hugged me again. We held each other for a long time until...
“Ahem!” Aubrey cleared her throat.
I suddenly stepped back into reality. I immediately pulled myself away from Chloe and put my hands in my pocket. “Hey guys!” I waved.
Aubrey stood up and walked up to me. She crossed her arms and lines began forming on her face.
“Why are you late?” she snapped.
“I’m not late!” I said. “You just texted me.”
“Yeah...like 10 minutes ago!”
“I just got here and I had to walk from the office.” I pointed out. “Did you expect me to just magically appear in a second?”
She rolled her eyes. “That’s unexcusable.”
This girl was getting on my nerves. Why doesn’t she always understand me? “Aub-“
“Both of you stop!” Fat Amy cut me off. “Stop fighting. We’re back together as one team again. We should all be in a happy place right now.”
Aubrey turned to glare at her. Realizing what she had done, Amy immediately sat back down and looked at the ground. Nobody tells Aubrey what to do.
“You know what, Fat Amy? You’re right.” Aubrey, to everybody’s surprise, said.
“I am?” Fat Amy’s eyes glistened.
“Yes.”
“Did you hear that guys? She said I was right!”
“Ok guys!” Aubrey clapped her hands. “It’s showtime.”
I watched as the Bellas headed to the front steps of the library and can’t help but wonder how easily they fell into Aubrey’s power. She’s mean, she’s controlling, and she just sucks out the happiness whenever she’s inside the room. She thinks she’s everything, prancing around with her held high like she’s better than everyone. Well, she’s not. I’m better than her and that’s a fact. I was too preoccupied that I forgot Chloe was still standing beside me. I jumped when she grabbed me by the waist.
“Don’t worry, Beca.” Chloe whispered.
She leaned closer, our foreheads almost touching. I could smell that cherry blossom-jasmine scent again. I could just lean in and kiss her or faint at the very moment.
“That’s just Aubrey being Aubrey. You know how she is.” She said.
I nodded.
“Good!” she giggled. “C’mon then!”
Chloe pulled my hand and we ran to where the Bellas were taking their places. A crowd was already forming in front of us.
