Chapter Seventeen:

Katerina's POV

CHRISTMAS EVE

Nope. Nope. No. No. No. That colour is nice but no size. What the candy cane is this? Eww gross. Is that what I think it is? No. No. Oh Shakespeare this can't be happening to me. Not today of all days. I sighed heavily thinking of my misfortune. It was Christmas Eve and I still hadn't bought a gift for Hunter. I had been contemplating what to get him for a while, but everything seemed so... dull. Either he had it already or it wasn't the 'right' gift. Why did Christmas shopping have to be so hard?! Give me a complicated math equation, no problem. Give me a surprise pop quiz, sure that's easy. But shopping for gifts? I feel like I've been stranded in the middle of the Sahara desert. Everywhere I looked people were rushing past with arms full of presents. Unlike my foul mood, the mall was lit with warmth and festivity. Every single corner was well adorned and decorated with the spirit of Christmas.

"You know you look like the Grinch just stole Christmas" Nevada spoke sitting beside me. We were currently outside a retail store, where I had stormed out after returning for the umpteenth time.

"Well it might as well have!" I replied frustration seeping into my voice, "I can't find anything for Hunter. I mean why can't things like these come with instruction manuals?!" I moaned. "Why is it so hard to shop for boys? Even worse a boyfriend!" I stomped my foot in annoyance.

"Calm down" Nevada chuckled, "What did you get for him last year?" She asked as she took a bite from her reindeer muffin.

I thought back to last year, and how easy it was to find him a present, "Well actually since I got him a pretty big gift, I sort of combined his birthday and Christmas present together."

"Oh, yeah? What did you give him?"

"A car" I winced, knowing how extravagant it might sound.

Immediately her eyes grew wide, "That Rover? You bought him that? Damn, Hunter sure is one lucky son of a b*tch."

"It's not like that" I frowned, "My dad originally bought it off my uncle after I passed my driving test. He was going to give it to me but I found it rather big and uncomfortable to drive. So...I sort of gave it to Hunter. Well in my father's terms I 'lent' it to him."

"Wow, but it was still pretty nice of you."

"It's also one of the reasons why my dad likes to call Hunter a chauffeur. I actually bought him some socks."

"Yeah, you really do suck at gifts."

We both laughed and began talking about the worst gifts we've ever received. I had called Nevada early in the morning and begged her to come out with me. I needed fresh ideas from someone who wasn't my mum, sister or sister-in-law. It was bad enough Juliette was taunting me because she had already bought and wrapped Hunter's present.

By now the day was coming to a close and I still had no gift.

"Come on there must be something you could give him," Nevada urged trying to think of ideas.

"I'm telling you, I've known this boy for a long time and I've practically given him everything. From ugly sweaters to the latest pencil cases."

We sat in silence for a while and let the music and chatter drift around us. I felt bad for dragging her out. It was Christmas Eve; she should be spending it with her family, not being pulled from store to store. Giving up seemed like the best option, when all of a sudden I felt like Zeus zapped me with his lightning bolt. I jumped from my seat, knocking Nevada down in the process.
