Melanie awoke first. The cold hard pavement underneath her brought her back to reality swiftly.  She rose and went to Harper who was crumpled in a heap. The demon had done its work, Harper’s cheekbones were sharp and his eye sockets were sunken. His face was very pale even under the fluorescent street lamp.

She grabbed her bag of herbs and gently opened his mouth praying the demon would not wake. She tipped them into his mouth and stood back as she watched steam began to pore out of his nose, eyes and ears.

“BITCH!” The demon uttered as the herbs began to take effect. Harper’s body jerked violently, his feet thundered against the floor. His body stopped moving as quickly as it had started.

Melanie moved in closer, worried it had been too much. Harper’s hand snatched at her throat and he began to squeeze. Melanie tried to wrench away his hands but despite her efforts, she was starting to lose consciousness. Her windpipe was slowly being crushed and there was nothing she could do about it.
