Pushing, Pulling

I loved you like I was the ocean waves.

When I first saw you, I came in

Crashing.

Pushing

Pulling

Pushing

Pulling.

Bringing my memories, beautiful, misshapen shells

For you to find and hold in the palm of your hand.

I hit you and pooled gently around your ankles, pulling you softly,

Come back with me. Be with me.

For a while, you followed, until you were

Knee-deep in my love.

Then suddenly, my waters were too cold, my current too strong, too many rocks on the bottom,

And despite my pulls, you walked

Out into the sand.

Leaving me behind.

And like the wave I am, I came back always

Pushing

Pulling

Pushing

Pulling

Pushing

Pulling.

Even after I realized you would never return from the summer of my love

For me, it was summer, but for you,

It was winter, and you needed someone warm, somewhere where the cold waters would not freeze you,

Holding you behind.

When I saw you in the ocean again, with another wave,

I was still

Pushing

Pulling

Pushing

Pulling,

Waiting for you.

But I no longer needed you.

Instead, I let myself go, and learned that

Pushing

Pulling

Led me away from you.

Allowing me to move on.
