I ran upstairs, desperate to get away from the screaming. They were always fucking screaming.
“Don’t you dare leave this house young lady! We told you no to leaving and that is final!” That was my mother. For a women with few words, her voice sure could fucking get loud. Maybe that’s why I hated loud noises so much now.
“Why are you fighting this Ali? Just so you can go, party, and fuck up again? What’s so damn great about the states?” My father’s voice was twice as loud as my mother’s and just as annoying. But both were still ineffective.
They always, and I mean always, said the exact same things. You’re just gonna fuck up again. You can’t handle the real world. I had heard the same words over and over again since grade 10 and I was fucking sick of it. I slammed the door and grabbed my last suitcase before my eyes trailed around the now bare room. Endless memories filled my head. I felt like smiling, frowning, and breaking down into tears all at the same time. How could such a beautiful place like England ever have such hurtful memories? I tried not to think on it long as I grabbed my bag and opened the door. Their voices had stopped finally and I was hoping I could just make it to the front door without them seeing me. As I crept down the stairs, I heard my mother’s sob. I saw her leaned over on the couch with her hands holding her face.
“Oh Jesus not waterworks again.” I was speaking to myself but apparently she heard me, because the way she looked at me, the disappointed frown she gave me matched with her red swollen eyes and wet cheeks, it almost made me run to the cab outside, take out all of my suitcases and boxes, and stay in this horrible place just so I wouldn’t see her like this ever again. But I couldn’t do this. I can’t stay here. It’s not healthy for me to be here anymore. I sat down my bag and walked over to her and she let out another soft sob, like she was finally giving up. I stepped in front of her and got onto my knees, prying her hands away from her face so she had to look at me.
“Mom, you know why I have to leave. I really want you to understand that this is what’s best for me. Please just try to understand.” She looked me straight into my eyes and whispered something too low for me to hear.
“What mom? I can’t hear you.” Suddenly I heard my dad walk into the house and started to get up, but she held me in place. She held me so tight, her nails were sure to leave little crescent moon shapes.
“Mom what are yo-“
“I understand.” She cut me off and whispered just as dad walked in, too low for him to hear. I nodded my head at her and stood up, walking toward my last suitcase.
“Alright Alison. You wanted to leave, then go. But do not think you can just come crawling back when everything goes to shit.” And with that, he walked up the big creaky staircase from my childhood, not even muttering a goodbye. I honestly preferred his disapproving silence to this cold shoulder. But what could I expect. I turned to say goodbye to my mom, but she was gone. I let out a heavy sigh as I picked up my bag and walked out the front door. I walked up to the cab and as I loaded my bag, I heard the cabby in the background saying something about how I’ll have to pay for him sitting around. I didn’t respond as I handed him a 50 and got into the back seat. As the car pulled off, I looked back to the house, taking in what could be my last sight of it ever. And as we rounded the corner, I swore I saw my mother in the window crying.
