The low bed of coals glowed, red hot embers throbbed steadily, like the heart of some giant beast. Katrina’s face burned with warmth. Sarah’s head rested on a patch of moss, her hair splayed out erratically.
Fade tossed another branch on to the fire, and answering Katrina’s questioning gaze, he said, “Cold,”
Silence prevailed for a few moments, in which the fire crackled and popped, throwing golden sparks up into the cold air.
“What’s your real name?” Fade asked, looking up from the knife he had been running a whetstone over.
“What?” Confused, Katrina met his gaze quizzically.
“Hawk obviously isn’t your real name. What I’m asking is what your real name is. Not your code name.”
“Katrina.” A spark of recognition flared deep within the depths of Fade’s eyes.
“That’s beautiful name,” whispered Fade. He drew nearer to her, his breath brushing her cheek. He lightly ran his lips over her neck.
“What’s your name?” Fade jerked back, as if he had been stung. His eyes snapped for a moment before turning gentle again.
“Teague. Teague Brooks.”
Deep inside Katrina, something popped into place, and a strange feeling overcame her. She felt as if she had just eaten a huge meal after working out. She felt complete, successful.
“We fit.” She said, looking deep into his warm eyes.
“I knew that from the first moment I saw you.” Teague wrapped his arms around the back of her neck and eased her down onto the moss bed. She shut her eyes as heat radiated from his strong arms and slowly, the darkness of sleep consumed her in it’s lair.
