Chapter 3

Popcorn…

The rain was pounding on the windows as if it wanted to be let in, as Florence and Isaac both stared out of the sash windows in dismay.

“I really wanted to go on your trampoline today.” Isaac inched away from the window and pulled open the door, which looked as if it was soon going to fall apart.

“Isaac, we don’t have a trampoline. Our garden’s too small!” Florence looked disappointingly at him and she jumped down the stairs but as she got to the third – or in this case second – she tripped and fell over a bit of old, rucked-up piece of carpet she screamed and started shouting at Sofia.

“That was you wasn’t it, Sofia?” Florence got up and stormed into the kitchen,

“Why did you do that? You know what; I don’t even care about your lame excuses anymore! YouWILL regret that, Sofia!”

Sofia limped into the lounge and collapsed onto the black, fake, leather sofa. She had just had a fight with her younger sister, and lost!

Suddenly, a bolt of lightening struck the sky and around one seconds later the two children heard a thunder clap. Sofia got up and limped towards the cupboard under the stairs. She had an idea!

“This is the final of X Factor and will you please welcome our judges, Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa and Louis Walsh!”

Dermot O’Leary’s voice boomed from the TV. Florence, Isaac and Sofia were sitting on the sofa, their eyes fixed to the TV but their legs kicking each other non-stop.

“Okay, Okay can you, like, stop now before my legs break off. I’m gonna … um … make some … popcorn, yeah I’m gonna make some popcorn!” Sofia stuttered, inching along the corridor, now both of her legs were in pain. The last noise the two children heard before they were engulfed in darkness was the ping of the microwave. Florence blinked furiously but sight would not return to her.

“Isaac … Isaac WH … where are you?” Florence called Isaac’s name but could not hear him anywhere, “Isaac just tell me where you are, make a sound. WHERE ARE YOU? I’m terrified.” Her voice was trembling and she had started to get tears in her eyes. She heard a rustling to her right and Isaac’s voice came from that direction.

“I’m here, Flo. It’s going to be ok; it’s proberly just a power cut. We can go and get some help from next door, I’m sure they’ll help out.” He tried to sound reassuring but failed; even Florence could hear the fear in his voice.

As Florence’s eyes adjusted to the darkness, she sniffed and turned to the direction of what she thought was Isaac, “There is no next door, we live on an old, empty, country road with no houses anywhere. We are alone. We’re going to have to sort this out ourselves.”
