~Merry Christmas!!!!~

Though when I update this (12/28), it would not be Christmas anymore. Oh well.... I hoped everyone had a happy holiday(s), whether you celebrated Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever holiday you celebrate!!

This is set in the future (in which I mean way way way into the future) during Christmas day.

Mr. Ambrose is slightly different than normal but I hope it isn't too much of a difference.

Enjoy!!

Rikkard Ambrose

Loud, quick footsteps thudded downstairs as I looked over my papers, meticulously piled neatly on my office desk. From afar, I could hear someone yell, "James William and Charlotte Ann Ambrose! Stop running!" Over that, the word "Christmas!" is shouted in high pitched voices.

Why we celebrate Christmas is unknown to me. It's such as waste of money. Don't people know how much Christmas trees are these days?? But Lilly had begged me and even put her love for chocolate on the line to celebrate Christmas in the house before James and Charlotte were born.

The door banged open and two children ran in. One tripped and fell, her dark hair flying all over the place. Sighing, I walked over to my crying daughter and picked her up. Her chocolate eyes were pouring tears while her chestnut-haired brother clutched his stomach, laughing. I sent a sharp look at him and he stopped immediately.

Charlotte, who now stopped crying, wriggled out of my arms and went to grab a colorful box that dropped onto the floor. Examining it, she yelled at her brother, "It buroken! Your fault James!"

"No! It your fault!"

"No! Yours!"

"Yours!"

"Yours!

Sighing once more, I shot "the look" at both of them, telling them both to be quiet. This was why I didn't want twins. Twice the amount of money spent, twice the trouble, but it was still all worth it.

Electricity still sparked between Charlotte and James, as they glared each other down. Soon it was broken by their mother shouting for them to go down and open the rest of their presents given by their grand aunt and aunt. Their eyes widened, smiles forming on their faces and they ran out of my office. As they left, I could hear them arguing over who would get the better present.

Finally, silence filled the room and I could go back to work. Many of my workers asked for vacation for Christmas, but of course, I denied them that as Christmas is just another normal day and skipping work would not get them anything.

I leafed through resumés for my next secretary. The most recent one quit because of the "stress". All the ones I had all either quit or had been fired, none of them ever fulfilling my expectations after I forced Lilly to stop when she was pregnant, though she stubbornly stayed until the end.

Someone knocked on the door, breaking my line of thought. "Enter," I said.

Lilly then opened the door, holding a tray in her hands. She placed it down onto my tables and took the resumés out of my hand.

"Oh, so you're looking for a new secretary," she said nonchalantly.

"I am."

"Hmmm," she pretended to think, "how about me? As a wom-"

"No."

"Why not? Is it because I'm a lady?"

"Who ever said you were a lady?"

She narrowed her eyes at me, "Since I birthed and mothered your children."

Silence.

"Ha," she smiled, "I win. Lilly - 1, Dick - 0."

Silence.

She walked over to the bookshelf, where the little figurine of a dancing piggy stood, covered in a thin layer of dust. Brushing off the dust, she sneezed, sending more dust particles flying.

"May God NOT bless you," I said, causing her to shoot daggers at me, metaphorically of course, with her chocolate eyes behind those long lashes.

"Remember, when you gave me this?" she asked.

"Yes. Now, put it back down," I answered.

She pouted, sending puppy eyes towards me. I felt a sudden tug in my chest. Had I pulled another muscle? To this day, I could never figure out what it was.

"Oh no! The food is going to get cold!" she exclaimed, putting the figurine down and rushing over to the tray she brought in. She lifted the lid, uncovering a steaming dish with a note and a small box next to it. Clearly, the food was not getting cold if it was still steaming.

I picked up the note, as Lilly stood in front of my desk awkwardly, shifting around on her feet.

~There's no bun because there is already one in the oven.~

I stare at it, flipped it over, scrutinized it at all angles for more information. I glanced at Lilly, who looked at me expectantly. Was this note supposed to mean anything? Did it mean we ran out of bread?

I looked at Lilly again. She sighed, and gestured to the box, telling me to open it. So I did. Inside was a small shoe that fit into the palm of my hand. Again, I didn't get it.

"Why did you buy this? James and Charlotte's feet are too big for this. Don't I always say this? Knowledge is power is tim-" She slapped her hand across my mouth, stopping me from speaking.

"Yes, you do. Knowledge is power is time is money. I know, but the shoe is not for James or Charlotte," she said, grinning.

"Then who is it for?"

"I'm expecting."

My eyes widen as it finally clicked in my head. Zeroing in on her stomach, I breathed out, "Really?"

Following my gaze, she laughed, "Yes, I went to the family physician to confirm it yesterday."

I stood up, walked around and hugged her. I mumbled, "Thank you" into her ear.

"Did you hit your head on something?" she asked, wrapping her arms around my waist, "because usually, my miser of a husband would complain about how much money he would have to spend on a baby. Especially when he got surprised with TWO last time. And he would not hug me and thank me."

From that, the corners of my lips lifted into a smile as I whispered, "Merry Christmas."

"Merry Christmas," Lilly replied, wrapping her arms even tighter around me. We stayed like that for a long time. 2 minutes and 37.4 seconds to be exact until...

A loud crash followed by a piercing wail sounded through the house, breaking us apart, and we rushed out to our children. Soon, we would have one more child to add to our family.
