~~Delilah's POV ~~
As Inder stepped out of the shower all dressed up, I felt a lump in my throat.
What if he leaves me like everyone else?
I tried to stop doubting him and held his hand as we went down the steps to the hired taxi to get the legal documents signed. A part of me felt happy, but a part of me wanted to run away and hide in a shack somewhere.
Have you ever noticed how scary it is? A good girl about to marry a bad boy?
Flashbacks. Memories. They just rushed into me and I looked out of the window as I chuckled at the amazing moments we had together.
I felt a cold hand on my shoulder. "Delilah, you ready?"
I looked at his eyes, twinkling in excitement. I nodded and we entered the room. Instead of a tux, he wore a tie with a new leather jacket and black leather shoes.
The inspector was already there, with flowers and chocolates.
The marriage instructor stood up and opened a hefty book. "Mr. Diego ... Ms.Delilah, are you ready for your seven vows?"
I smiled at Diego and nodded back to the right. "Yes."
The police inspector held up a thumbs up and I chuckled at that. Mr. Marriage Intructor, as I like to call him, turned the first page.
"Now repeat these vows after me. First vow: if you do a good deed or go on a pilgrimage."
"If you do a good deed or go on a pilgrimage..."
"... observe a fast or a charity..." he continued. "Then you will do it with me..."
"Then you will do it with me..."
"If you agree... then come reside on my left side."
"If you agree... then come reside on my left side."
He held my hands affectionately. "I agree!"
"Good..." I whispered.
The instructor smiled at us. "Now for the second promise: the way you respect your mother and father... similarly... you have to respect my mother and father too."
Diego looked at the instructor and back at me with hesitation. I could feel the tension so I gripped his hands tighter and stepped closer to him, hoping he would calm down. "The way you respect your mother and father... similarly... you have to respect my mother and father too."
I could feel his breathing was getting faster and faster.
And faster.
The instructor continued. "And according to your family's norms... you'll perform religious deeds and stay devoted to God. If you agree, then come reside on my left side."
I started. "And accord-"
Diego let go of my hands and lifted a finger. "Wait a minute, Delilah." And with that, he stepped outside and walked out.
I looked at the Instructor in fear. "Just a second..."
I ran out to see Inder standing in the doorway, lighting a cigarette. I held his arm. "What are you doing?..." I winced.
"I don't respect my father, Delilah."
"Diego-"
"And I can't respect yours."
I shook his arm. "You don't-"
"Delilah, if I make that promise inside, it would be a lie, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it, Delilah?" He stammered, and I could sense the fear.
I stayed silent. Does this mean we are not getting married?
I didn't give up. I took his hand in mine and went inside the marriage room. "Sir, could we just exchange garlands and not vows to get married?"
The instructor hesitated but finally agreed.
I held Diego's garland up high to adorn his neck but his eyes directed to something behind me. "I was expecting you much earlier, Sir."
I looked behind me to see my father and mother dressed in rich materials as if they were coming to celebrate their daughter's wedding.
My father looked at me, expressionless. "I heard you're getting married today?"
As I held one of Diego's hands, I dropped the garland and hugged him, begging him to accept this marriage. "Papa, please. Please let us get married. Let us get married please please please!"
"And if I say no?"
I stayed silent and dropped Inder's hand. What am I doing?
My father pulled me away from him and tucked in a strand of my hair. "You know, this 20/52 said to me yesterday... that he would kill for you... and die for you too. There's no promise bigger than that, Delilah. And there's no boy better than him for you!"
I looked at him in surprise and back at Inder who was already tearing up. "Garland him, Delilah."
I picked up the garland from the floor and put it around his neck as he did the same for me.
The instructor held up a pen and a book. "Sign here, please."
Inder went first and held the pen to me.
My vision blurred.
I ignored it and went towards the book and looked for a blank space. Suddenly my head started throbbing in pain and my vision blurred out again.
I quickly signed the piece of paper messily and looked up to see the instructor and he widened his eyes at me in shock. I looked back at the paper and saw...
A drop of blood.
I looked back at Diego but it wasn't long enough to see his face clearly and I fell backwards
All became black.
