NATHAN
Is she serious or just overly sarcastic? Her face is completely serious. Void of emotions. Guess, she isn't Kara.
"Sorry. I just took a guess. Goodbye then." I turn around but a laugh makes me turn back.
"You thought *laugh* that I was *laugh* serious?" I nod. She just laughs harder. She recovers after a while and holds out her hand to shake. "Hello. My name is Kara Lawson." I take her hand and shake it firmly. She slightly winces at my grip.
"I'm Nathan. Are you alright? Sorry if I hurt you." I apologise keeping a smile on my face.
Don't mess this up Nate. You've wanted a sister since you were nine.
"I'm fine. But it would help if you let go of my hand." She says through gritted teeth. I drop it and she cradles it. She makes a fist an few times then drops her hand. "Fuck, you're strong." She laughs.
"Yeah, I do martial arts." I admit sheepishly. I don't know what it is about this girl but she has this aura around her. It's kind of intimidating. I step aside and motioned to my family.
"These are my friends. North, Victor, Luke, Dr Green, Mr Blackbourne, Gabriel, Kota, Silas and Sang." She looks like she's assessing them.
"You're all really close, aren't you? Like a family." She smiles. It's a nice smile, genuine, understanding. She knows. She knows what it is like to have a better relationship with non-blood related people. I can tell by her face.
Dr Green came forward and smiled at her. "Call me Sean."
"Hi Sean, hi everyone." I wrapped an arm around her shoulders and we started walking.
"Come on Kara. Let's get you home." I chirped.
I think back to when we found out about Kara. All of us were hanging out. Sang was sitting in my lap when my father came barging in. I gave her to Luke and stood up to him.
"What the hell do you want?" I asked.
"What do you mean what do I want? This is my house and I can come here whenever I fucking well please boy!" My father bellowed.
"What do you want?" I asked again in a controlled tone barely holding in my rage.
"Fine. You do remember Kara don't you?" I nodded. Kara, my little sister who my mother gave away so she wouldn't be affected by my father's abuse.
"Well, in two days pick her up from Charleston International. She's going to live with you. I've talked to her and she agrees. Don't be an asshole to her. And keep your slut from slapping her ." He jerked his chin to Sang and I had to resist the urge to hit him for calling my peanut a slut. He knows nothing.
He left and a grin formed on my face. Kara. I'm going to meet my little sister.
Sang asked me who Kara is so I went on to explain how my mother told me about how I have a little sister, about what she did for her.
I've always wondered what kind of person she is. The Academy told me that she's happy and healthy and doesn't pose a threat. But I don't know about her likes and interests. What food she won't eat.
Kara turns around to Sang who smiles and waves at her. Kara does the same and turns back to me.
"So is that your girlfriend?" I purse my lips and think about my answer. She may take it the wrong way when I say that we share her.
"Yes, that's Sang."
She bumps into me with a smile. "She's cute."
"Go talk to her then." I suggest. Maybe a girl friend is what Sang needs.
"Nah." I frown at her answer hoping Sang didn't hear her brush her off so easily.
"She won't bite you know." Well apart from your fingers and your neck.
"No, I guess she won't but I don't know about some of the others. They're a bit intimidating." I shrug.
"I think you're pretty intimidating yourself." I said and she chuckled.
"Sure Nathan, sure I am."
